NES cart internal PS3 hdd/usb dock.
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:00:49 AM »

I came up with this idea while shopping for a new external drive solution for my ps3.
A ways back I was working on a ps3 with a bad br but had a good br controller. It was my spare ps3. I had an idea about internalizing 2.5 " hdd docks where the br player was. So it hit me. Why not take a nes cartridge and put a 2.5" hdd inside and cut my drive bay opening to match the rectangle of the nes cartridge. I have a few smaller capacity hdds laying around from ps3 hdd upgrades done. So what I am thinking is putting all my racing games in one cartridge and shooting games in another etc. Then print lables for each.
For those of you who have ever owned an nes system or who might be old enough that the nes was your first real system. For me the nes was the first system my mother bought for me. It might have been the last. I was very independent later in life. But this build will be a tribute to those child hood memories of blowing in the end of the magical golden plastic of legend of Zelda.

for reference pics see this build.  This is where the build started...

graffix for the kids cover art. what I got so far... needs more work to make it more nes like. I would love some help from the art team.

Shooting games cover art... getting better.

NEW shooter cover art...

Here is the stuff for today. Time to make the carts look nice.
My lil helper...
http://youtu.be/YZuJCEzhzcg

The Krylon silver turned out to be a perfect match for the fat PS3 trim. Not the chrome that 60gb had but the metallic silver.
If anyone has a good match to that, please share.

New face plate remolded.

Here is a test fit of the cover art printed on regular paper and taped into place. All I had to do was round the corners to get it to fit.
The real prints will be on glossy stickers.

This is the expansion pack concept in the works... first up sd card expansion pack.

Here is the new Dock now with USB support and SATA.

Here is both parts of the NES cartridge drive mounted together and screwed in place on The PS3. The sata/usb adapter is mounted to the 2nd part of the tray. Fully working hot swappable nes cartridge sata 2.5" hdds.

http://youtu.be/W8HYC-yolxc

http://youtu.be/9cQ85_8wPkE

give you an idea what Im thinking...

Side note I have a spare plastic cover for the left side of the ps3 front. The piece that covers the media card readers. I could use that to make a flip top cover just like the original nes and it would keep the profile of the ps3's shape.

Just ordered this...

12.99$ free shipping.

A friend says he's got nes games to donate...
Some mock up stuff of nes cartridge bay and mock up external drive parts. This hdd stuff is for something else but is the same part as what I ordered. All I really need is an nes cartidge and I can build this thing.

more mock up... this time the cartridge bay mocked up inside the PS3 case. Remember the BR drive has been removed and the controller board kept.

More Mock up... but getting there. Also completed the NES cartridge hdd.

Thats pretty sweet.  Never saw that one coming!  Thats actually a pretty slick idea.  Clean up the case a bit, and you have a damn good looking system!

Thanks guys . The nes cartridge will get a new sticker and the case still needs work. (more crazy mods similar to this might be coming) at least an intake fan mod coming.
The front case br drive cover still needs to be cut to match the cartridge, but other than that its pretty close.
BTW for the first cartridge build I used a 40gb I had laying around. big enough to hold the kids games.
320gb coming soon.

Side note: Idea for a PS3 stand that could include a drive bay like this. no internal mods needed to the PS3. Just drop in PS3 and connect USB cable.
Something like this with this mod added to it.

I went to test demo and shoot video of the drive in action but I messed up formatting and had to reformat.

Not really Tracy. This mod went very quick and painless. 2/5 difficulty. Thank you though.

Hey it's more than I've ever done, my biggest mod is putting a red battery pack in a white controller by accident LOL

I'm thinking about building an external dock/charger/media card reader/ usb hub for my ps3. i would like to use a top load nes for the case. This would be to use with my fully functioning modded ps3.  This woul allow me to use the nes cartridges on my good ps3. Also I can hide my ps3 and still have access to it through external usb. what you guts think?
I also have an idea about expansion packs out of these nes cartridges. By adding a usb port to my dock on the side of the sata connection will allow me to add like a media card reader nes cartridge, or a usb hub cartridge, or cooling fan cartridge. Maybe even slim dvd drive or slim blu ray. Put a usb controller inside one and make a media player control cartridge. I am up for suggestions about this.
Another Idea. I might even use this for my dual boot coming up... 4.0 on one hdd and 3.55cfw on another with a dual boot nand. Put a sata extension to the internal hdd. and put the hdds in the cartridges. The dual boot feature is triggered by a switch. If I put a hole in 1 cartridge , aligned with a spring loaded switch, I can even have it auto switch nand.

Thank you everyone for your support here on AM. I am going to revise and add usb docking also. I like the idea of coming up with new cartridge usb mods for this. If it connects via usb or sata and fits in an nes cartridge it can be added in as an expansion pack.
I put an sd card up to an nes cartridge and it fits inside the cut out.

Exrta usb ports are always a plus.
wireless key board mouse receiver.
guitar/drums etc receiver.
the ps eye for the move.... hmmm interesting but probably not.
ps2 controller adapter
does the ps3 support usb wireless N?
answer : no the PS3 does not support usb wireless networking.

I really like this idea, gives you multiple choices and more variety of where you are heading with this, Its a great idea, and gives you choices if somthing later down the road you want to add to it thru sata or usb ports. I think you should go with this and run, its a great idea and mulit media center also all in the same consoles. nice job once again pete this has come along ways in such a short period of time . :#1:

Thanks Rodent. Truethfully this mod links all the way back to the Reaper. I spent a lot of time trying to put dual sata drives in the dvd slot.  A lot of the ground work was done. All needed was to add the nes cartridge.
I love the feeling I get when I am inspired. Something new,  fun, and usefull.

Update: I am going to use a 32gb usb flash drive instead of sata hdd for the kids cart. Since children will be handling this cart,  it should be durable and flash drives are tougher than hdds.

blue LEDs is exactly what I was going to do. Cut out PLAYSTATION 3 logo , re-pour clear and backlight blue. Also backlighting the dock blue and ext hdd activity light blue.

Thought of that the ps3 mobos are to big to fit. I wish it did that would make this mod complete.

spoiler: but a psp mobo should fit no problem....
