Stupid Mistakes
« on: July 04, 2012, 11:54:36 AM »
So the other day in electronics class we were doing Op-Amp comparators these things One of these and using a 5k variable resistor, so in some brain fart moment I put the desktop power supply to 15v, instead of 5v, ok cool, now time to setup the DMM and then i see smoke and sparks, and I had managed to melt the resistor and my breadboard and leave the classroom stinking.

So Acidmods, what is the most lack of brain moments you have had with electronics?

this is a good topic and to the guys who deny it are lying out there  :censored:
well one of my many brain farts i was working on an xbox rgh install once and because i didnt wanna clean my work area i placed the xbox board on my lap not knowing my dam belt was exposed and shorted the whole thing out while acquiring the dam cpu key   leaving me with the white magic smoke
will say if your begin a project and  poop hits the fan from the get go leave it and come back almost a given your gonna mess it up

I have a few stupid mistakes. One was soldering in the nud and dropping a ball of solder. Boy did it sting.

Another I was working on a project with elwire and using an inverter that stepped the voltage up to 400+volts and during one testing phase after I had finished and went into the project box to tinker I forgot to turn off and disconnect the power get ing a very painful sting luckily it was low amperage otherwise I'd of been fried. It did leave my arms paralysed for a couple of hours.

i am not responsible for what i do or my advice

i cant think of something electronics related right off the bat but i certainly remember something that happened in my welding class..
making a reverse trike.. i didnt double check that everything was welded properly.. rode the thing and the forks went right under me :P my hands were cut up for a few weeks after that..

as for soldering without clothes on.. i dont know either :P

i didnt wanna clean my work area i  it up

This happens so often you get so tied up with working and you get busy and tied up with stuff been so many times i had the soldering iron plugged in while doing rgh or jtag console along with the hot glue gun ... Yet one wrong move sent the soldering iron flying and hot glue gun some how i managed to catch them with out burning myself or catching anything on fire

Small work areas and messy work areas can cause alot of problems and can be dangerous... I have made many mistakes in my life... electrical , machining etc... You learn faster from your mistakes then anything else... becareful think twice maybe 3 times before doing..

This one isn't electronics related either, but in my younger days I built a potato gun. It had a flint style lantern lighter, and I made it so that the barrel could be removed for troubleshooting. One specific time the flint had gotten wet so I removed the barrel to troubleshoot. I was trying to light it, but I couldn't tell if there was a spark or anything, so I looked down into the chamber to check. Just then it lit. I didn't burn my skin, but it took weeks for my eyelashes and eyebrows to grow back.

Not "electronics" related, but I've watched Matt make an attempt at removing a rear view mirror magnet with a chisel ...I laugh everytime I think of that. Just a hair of a tap and CRACK! (I told his goofy butt it was a bad idea)

lol, its not a magnet its a metal slug with a ridge and shaped like a wedge. the mirror slides over it. this is true with most cars. the slug is epoxied to the glass windshield.  Occasionally the glue fails in this heat. you buy a kit from the auto shop. to glue it back. I glued the damn thing on upside down. So I needed to remove it. I got a very sharp wood chisel out of my tool bag and gave it a pry, it didn't budge, so I gave it a little tap.... Crack 6-8 inches across the top of the passenger side.

I find it funnier that you put it on upside down lol. If heat is what made it fail in the first place, then why didn't you just heat it up before attempting to pull it off.
