multicolor led question

i have a 7 multicolor 3mm led that is tap on a 12v battery in my motorcycle..

my question is can i use it on my controller led mod...

the power source that i know in ps3 controller is 5v only..

will this work?is the power enough to lit my led?

I doubt it.  We would need to know whe specs on the leds to know for sure.

If it is on a strip or something like that then you could maybe use it but you would have to remoive each led from the strip and re wire them. Thats asuming that they are normal 3.3v les in series.

actually it is not in series..

it is a single led that has 7 colors in it..

just like the RGB led..

it is used as a motorcycle accessory in our place..

You will need a controller or it will just stay on the color closest to the input voltage. It may cycle through but I doubt it.

you can get some 7 color leds from Rat Shack that have a much lower operating voltage.

Also, there should be 12V on the PS3 somewhere.

seen some 3 mm LED color fader on ebay. Not sure if this is what you are looking for. you might also be able to find RGB 50/50 SMD online as well.

Ah its a controller.... You will never run a 12v led from a controller you could try a charge pump which might allow it to flash, but its not going to give the desired effect.

Just because it's wired up to 12v doesn't mean it's a 12v LED. If this is just a typical looking 3mm LED with 2 leads, then look for a Resistor on one of the wires. If it's around 470ohms or so then that's all you'd need to change as it's around a 3v or so LED. Those are Rainbow LEDs and they change colors on their own, the circuitry that controls them is built into the LED. You could use that in a controller, but you'd be better off just getting a new one.

If it's some mess of LEDs and/or uses some control box to make the colors change (would have 3 or more wires going to the LED) then it would be more work to dig into that.

The PS3 has no 5v power source either, only when it's plugged into the USB port will it have 5v in there. The available voltages in the PS3 controllers to use are either straight from the battery, which varies and is not great for LEDs, or the regulated 2.8v in there that is used for powering the Sticks and such, which is a tad low but works for a 3mm Rainbow LED.
