PvP's DPAD replaced with an Internal Analog Stick Tutorial

soldering to the dpad (on mobo) is NOT that hard any more!!

using my technique, any newb with minimal soldering skills can replicate the 'replacing the dpad with an analog stick and wiring it to the analog ports on the mobo and then wiring the dpad on the mobo to another dpad (or original nub with razor)' mod....lol idk wtf the real name of that mod is...

Background Info

replacing the dpad with a retrocon analog stick and wiring it to the analog ports on the mobo is ez but what about wiring the dpad connections from the mobo to another dpad (where original nub is located)??

looking at both foo and josenose's designs, they both had something in common: they were directly wired to the dpad connections on the mobo. now from what ive read, they each have at least got owned once with a mobo. so i have been thinking of doing this to my psp when my clear case comes but how do i decrease the risk of getting my contacts screwed up?

Plan of Action

i plan to take an exacto and scrap off the plastic layer itself and rewire directly onto the dpad. so there it leaves no soldering risk at all on the mobo. will see how it turns out soon. keep u all posted

there are two methods to soldering to the dpad

Method One:Direct Soldering

Step One: How to Solder onto the DPAD Ribbon Connector

Step Two: Wiring Configuration Walk-Through

Method Two: Safety Pins

Step One: WTF An Even Easier Way of Soldering onto the Dpad?!?!?!

Wiring POC for the "WTF An Even Easier Way of Soldering onto the Dpad?!?!?!"

pin positions may vary

Instructions on how to use Safety Pins

Step One: Solder wires to Safety Pins

Step Two: Cut 2-3 cm away from sharp point

Step Three: Hold Pins above Leads and Push Down

*make sure you have about 3-4 layers of electrical tape (facing towards the ribbonc able) underneath the ribbon cable so it has more stability

Step Four: Hotglue Over Pins for Stability

POC
Finished Product...sort of...

Aha and where is the proof that you can solder on it?

Have no shame in being kindly and gentle, but if the time comes in the time of your life to kill, kill and have no regret. In the time of your life, live so that, in that wonderous time you shall not add to the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it.

It's a nice idea, but it wouldn't work in practice. As soon as you touch that soldering iron to the pads, the surrounding plastic will melt.

LOL the way you americans say solder is funny

sounds like you say sodder

Anyway that thing you've used in the first pic, is that a piece of Alluminium (or if you're a yank Aloominum) or somthing else

Yeah you can sodder to the bit of plastic but meh if you've done an UP install you realise how huge those joins are in reality :P

Overall a pretty good tut

poc for soldering is up

used a really thick wire just to show that a smaller wire will stay on there fine.

at first i thought the plastic was gonna melt away like a hot knife thru butter but surprisingly the plastic doesnt melt away at all with my 15w iron. just dont stay at the soldering joint for too long and u should be fine.

well just to make a suggestion..Isn't it better to solder on the solder points of the ribbon cable connector??Because with the ribbon cable you can't solder as many times as you want due to melting.

it took me 20 minutes to solder onto the ribbon and u only get one chance at it because it melts. with the pins you just solder on a wire to the pin and then push it into the ribbon. that took me 10 minutes to do

I don't like hot glue much, but your connections look really sturdy.

the connections for the dpad and analog are very sturdy. but it seems that everytime i wire the dpad correctly the analog needs to be rewired and vise versa. its very tedious and i would recommend ne one that has a lot of time and patience on their hands to try this mod. you will get it working within minutes but its all about spacing out the wires when you are putting on the faceplate. also be sure to electrical tape or hotglue the joints so they dont touch each other and ground out making the buttons go crazy and what not. have fun!

i tried soldering to the d-pad. didn't work. what solder did you use and wich temperature does your soldering iron have?

ne one thats doing this i would highly recommend hotglue. not because its my favorite type of glue to use but because its strong enough that the wires/joints wont move. but also if u screw up, with enough force you can remove the hotglue and start over again.

I'm gonna etch a razor board and try to solder them to the d pad, but i still want my d-pad buttons to work like regular cos I'm putting my razor board in a dual numb position. So safety pins through the leads wont ruin them right? only make a connection point and not break the lead, right?

here is my plan

1. etch the razor board, drill the holes and solder some lose wires to it

2. pin the d-pad, and apply some hobby glue (that me and my g/f uses for warhammer figures), i dont really wanna do this step if it will ruin the buttons :P

3. solder the wires on the razor board to the safety pins on the d-pad

4. drill a hole in the psp faceplate

i think wiring the dual numb to the d-pad would make it feel more authentic
