How dangerous is soldering?

As you see the name of the subject, how dangerous is soldering?
I personally don't think it's very dangerous, IF you handle it properly.
But i've a dad who's worried that soldering is freaking dangerous,
so how dangerous is it?

tell him that you will be very responsible and careful when handling a soldering iron, actually soldering is very safe though. I've only burned myself once or twice and dropped my iron on my carpet once. If your careful you shouldn't have any problems.

yeah, i've only burned myself once, its more dangerous as in it breaks stuff, not physical harm.

If your dad is that worried, ask him if he will supervise you whilst you do it.

just use really thin solder and you probably wont short stuff, the components are very small.

Too much fumes can give you lightheadedness.

It really depends where you put your iron, normally from solder it should not be to dangerasue

my dad worries about me using the soldering iron at night. he thinks that something bad will happen ( burn the house down, start a little fire) and "i wont be able to tell them on time to help me on what ever happens".Even thou i  do it behind his back i just got burned 3 times and drop the iron on my carpet 4 times(nothing happened). Also im 14 .

Alright, for some reason this reminds me of when my sister was bugging my parents for a pet.  He's afraid that you won't be responsible enough, so to prove that you will be... do the following:

~ Prepare an area where you will solder (has to be nice and clean like a desk or something)
~ Show that you have good lighting and good ventilation (anxious parents like to know that their children aren't breathing in hazardous fumes)
~ Get your soldering iron and make sure you know how to work it properly (if in doubt get the iron with the lower voltage... lower voltage means lower temperatures making it harder for you to make mistakes with)
~ Get your safety equipment together!


To elaborate, this means:
- Safety glasses (just in case you encounter a bubble in the solder and it spurts)
- Clothes that you can solder in (burn marks in good clothes aren't good to work with)
- A wooden slab (steal/buy one a cutting board or a decent sized piece of wood to solder on... but whatever you do don't solder on plastic)
- Wet sponge (or if you can't get one a wet maxi pad works surprisingly well)

Now remember:
- How to do first aid for a burn
- Keep your iron in its stand when not in use and always be aware of where it is and don't put it in a place where it can be knocked over

Do this and I'm sure he'll approve.

After a lot of talking, i have (finally) convinced me dad to allow me to solder.
He just was afraid that i didn't know how to solder and that i might burn down the house.

to tell the truth, i have a powerful 60 or 70 watt soldering iron, its very hot, and when im bored, i get paper and try to set it on fire, ive never actually got it on fire, and the worst i have done it made a peice of paper a tad brownesh, also, last month i didnt have a stand so i left it on the table, and no burning whatsoever but the disadvantage of leaving it there is that sometimes when i pick it up when im using it, i pick up the wrong side, and tbh, it doesnt hurt much, its like being pinched by somebody that cant pinch well. also, when i had a hard test one day, i purposely burnt myself with it on my right hand right at the start of my fingers so whenever i bend them, it hurts, its good, try it, just be careful, if you have sensitive skin, then yeah touching it will hurt a bit but if you have thick hard skin like mine, it doesnt hurt much, im covered in blisters and bruises and scars for many reasons. good luck
