homemade laptop battery thoughts
« on: January 19, 2008, 09:43:00 PM »
okay so I am thinking of making a laptop battery that should last for several hours 5+.  and what I am thinking about is buying many li-ion 3.7V bateries and wiring 3 in serial for 10.8-11.1V and then 3 or 4 in parallel wiring in protection circuit boards so they all charge properly.  I think that taking a thin sheet of plastic and laying out the batteries and all the wiring and maybe using thin sheets of aluminum or copper as heatsinks another sheet of plastic, then vacuforming with epoxy resin to complete the casing.  basically in the end I would have a thin (maybe 1/4") flat battery that would  match the length and width of my laptop charge just like the stock battery, not be more than a couple pounds, and be 2 to 3 times the stock battery capacity.

BTW I googled this and only found people making batteries from NiCd for laptops

please tell me what you think as i have only been kicking around this idea for a couple hours, and do not fully understand the ways of the world.

thats because its comparitively safe where as yours is a death battery most likely. have fun typing without hands or eyes even perhaps. seriously if you really plan on doing this get proffesional help. and its better not to mix circuits lipoly are very touchy like that and in other ways. charging and running out is also a problem.

Ken i wouldnt have done it any other way

I say don't try it.
But if you do be sure to have someone by to call for help if something happens.

getting old is mandatory growing up is optional.

11v cannot kill you, ive licked my battery contacts before (dont ask why)

and it just tickles sorta, its wierd

but just incase, use protection (not that sort of protection)

protection as in goggles, gloves etc, as there is really powerful acid, how i know, somebody ripped one in my face

11v can still be harmful and they way your going (licking electrical components) , your headed for a Darwin Award

Electric current     Voltage          Voltage             Maximum power       Physiological effect
(amperes)            at 10,000 ohms   at 1,000 ohms              (watts)
0.001 A              10 V                     1 V                        0.01 W        Threshold of feeling an electric shock, pain
0.005 A              50 V                     5 V                        0.25 W        Maximum current which would be harmless
0.01-0.02 A            100-200 V       10-20 V                  1-4 W          Sustained muscular contraction. "Cannot let go" current.
0.05 A                       500 V             50 V                         25 W        Ventricular interference, respiratory difficulty
0.1-0.3 A              1000-3000 V      100-300 V              100-900 W      Ventricular fibrillation. Can be fatal.
6 A                        60,000 V           6,000 V                    400,000 W     Sustained ventricular contraction followed by normal heart
.                                                                                                      rhythm.

Voltage isn't what determines how dangerous a shock is as you will see from tec_'s table

It's all about the amperage, the media has overblown voltage and popularized it because "60,000 VOLTS ZOMG" sounds more spectacular then "A man was today killed by 10 amps of electricity"

But yeah, leave battery mixing to the chemists and just buy a battery which in the long run will be cheaper then medical bills ;)

i was trying a similar thing on my box 360 controller at my mates and i need to go and get it fixed as it wont charge and ive been electricuted by 240v or just over 0.2A a couple of times and it is pretty cool, it hurts but its cool and 11v wont do much to be honest and yet people still say you can die from 240v but seriously whats the worst that could happen, once you make this battery you may find out but if you do make it good luck
BLARG!!

seems that people expect me to fail, burn myself, shocked, mutilated and dead.  Not one good comment or a helpful hint

yes but his 11v battery will have relatively high amperage because laptop batteries are very big

you have to understand man, if you did this and we egged you on your parents can trace it back to this site...

knowing how the western world is chances are cyber could get sued

its a dangerous and silly thing to try when for the cost of the chemicals and products you could just buy a battery without any risk on your life

its funny that you dont consider people trying to prevent you from hurting or possibly killing yourself "helpful"

Why would you want to make a laptop battery anyway?

getting old is mandatory growing up is optional.
