Help me with a resume and some proof reading?
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:41:47 PM »
I need to have a resume for a apprenticeship program. I dont even rember how to write one. Anyone want to give me some help, maybe send me one that they have as an example? I also have to write an essay explaining why I want to get in the apprenticeship program. The program consists of industrial business, one is a machine shop and the other is a welding/manufacturing company. Here is what I have so far. It cannot exceed 250 words. Here it is... let me know if there is something I should add or change...

My name is Douglas. I am applying for the apprenticeship program for multiple reasons. One of the main reasons of me wanting to take the apprenticeship program is to get on the job training in the industry field. I think this will help me with deciding on a future job and give me training for the future. Another reason why I am applying for the program is because I am a very hands on type of person. I love to use work with not only my brain power but with my hands. I love seeing how things are built and I think it would be really interesting to be apart of the actual process. I enjoy building things and I have a lot of determination. At the moment I am builing a 1929 Chevy Sedan. I started out with a body and have build my own frame and the rest of the parts I can. This required a lot of determination and I proved to my self that I have that. I hope you will see that I would really enjoy working for your business and that I would be a great asset. I cant wait to see you at the interviews! That is all until then. Thanks for reading this!

no problem bro. the only suggestion that was made by our career councilor was to ditch all the bolding and get more creative with your job descriptions (flowerier, wordy, descriptive, ect...)

i would go a little more in depth on what you learned, not just "learned basic concepts of metal working" explain what you've done. you want descriptive sentences. not fragments

if you have any "community service" that you have done in the past, it would be a good idea to add that too

-donations
-volunteer work
-etc

i would also suggest cleaning up your facebook and/or myspace its quite common for employers to check those and they will judge you on what kind of content you have in them.

not saying they will, but its not a bad thing to be all squared away in that section.
