Router & dd-wrt help

hey guys i need help choosing a router that i can use dd-wrt on and use all its functionality so basically a totally compatible router. I've heard of - belkin, buffalo, lynksys, netgear and d-link as brands of router. so basically i need a totally compatible very reliable router that has adsl modem built into it.

thanks for any help. it would also be great if you could tell me how to install dd-wrt on whichever router you suggest.

not sure what dd-wrt is, but one thing i will recommend is a routher with 802.11n
my airport extreme has that and it is FAAAST

i got that already - i want another router especialy one that i can add an atenna to so that i can put antennas around the house and up on the roof so that i can pick up wireless from around my neighborhood

ah, so you want to extend it far, real far?

make sure its protected...

as far as i know you can use an airport extreme to extend and existing network..but its pricey at 170 US

DD-WRT is a Linux firmware, which can be used to boost signal ouput well above legal limits.

Cool idea Robin, but make sure its WPA-2k otherwise your wifi will be haxxed.

yeh i have two routers already and only one is open (short range) for my friends when they come round

did you not hear any thing i told you when i introduced you to dd-wrt.
Well get a linksys below version 5 to get all the features. another company you need to check to dd-wrt website.

read the last two columns to see what you can do on each router and check this too

and check this   RAM and Flash Memory. the memory is the key point the bigger the better to small not worth it. i have a v5 linksys wrt54g and am running micro version 24 it works for what i need it for but i rather have an older version.

it was like 3-4 am when you told me so no lol. i hate reading long lists like that thats why i asked for help. and i need help finding where to buy said router ebay uk or usa or a shop

and whats the differences between the free version and the 3 paid for ones in there shop

Netgear sell routers that are already running Linux, so get one of them.

ive decided what im getting. hopefully if i can get the money together i will be getting a buffalo router, a 500mW or 1000mW amplifier (probably 500), a splitter, 1 or 2 15db omni directional antennas for my roof and some cableing obviously.

and that should be enought to get me some decent coverage. im not sure on what sort of range exactly as i know you can boost the power using dd-wrt anyway. i also dont know wether it would be within the legal broadcasting limits of the UK. so have any of you got any ideas what sort of range i would be looking at using this set up

Idk about UK, but from what I've heard here in US theres a group tryin to make it so your Wifi range can only be on your own property unless you have signed/written permission from the other owners.. Some bullcrap like invasion of privacy is what they're claiming.. Also if one of the dudes that lives nextdoor to you has a wireless signal that falls on your property (and its not password protected or anything) you can use it without breakin any laws since it's on land you own (in US atleast). A long time ago I was planning on making a large wireless lan setup about a half city block by the same, huge amp would be needed tho. Was gonna be able to host all my buddys on a lan so we could have lan partys at home lol, gave it up cause it was outta my pricerange tho. Good luck with your project.

There is no real law agaisnt how big a wifi signal can be.

Also, go for the biggest ariels you can get, 4 directional would be better, and 1 omni directional.

yeh ive spent the last few days looking into all of  this and looking at the cost of each part im going to have to do it in sections. first will be the router, then the cables and booster, then the splitter then the omni then i will consider dding big directional ones. im still trying to find out the sort of maximum ranges to expect from wireless networks. like i wonder how these wifi citys do it in america do they have a router on each block or do they have a couple of "super networks" laced around the area

Spend less on the Router, as i have said Netgear make 'Enthusiast' Linux running Routers, get one as they are around £50

link me to cheep uk one - it needs 8mb flash and 32mb ram min, and a decent chipset with very good range on it. also needs to be dd-wrt compatible
