USB HOST/MASS STORAGE PROJECT STATUS
« on: July 17, 2008, 07:31:58 PM »
Status Update.

I Have now restructured the version 1.7 nethostfs source code so that compiles on both BIG endian and LITTLE endian computers.

I want to thank both Dark Alex and Ahman who did all the fine work on this to begin with and who provided help so I could get it working.

I am making a new video of the NSLU2 running a mini access point and serving files to the PSP wirelessly, without a network connection of any kind.

The code now supports 10 PSPs at the same time.

You will be able to plug in a wireless joystick, a mini access point, the NSLU2, a hard drive, and a battery.
Put it all in a bag and bring it in the room of PSPs and they can all play different games or even the same game.

I am now concentrating on getting remotejoy incorporated.
I am running a Logitech Wingman wireless game pad so the receiver for that can also go in the same bag.

Can we say look ma no wires ?

As soon as remotejoy is completed I will add it to the tutorials on the installs.

Later and have a great day.

IT will take them at least a year.

Then it will take us months to a year to break down whatever protection they put into it
to keep us from running CFW on it.

It still won't let us plug all the kewl stuff we want into it.

So as far as I'm concerned. I don't give a  :censored:

Besides one other thing, They did theirs, WE did ours !!!!

Status Update.

I have completed the schematic for the USB 2.0 High Speed 4 port enhancement daughter board for the xm4.

I have nethostfs working and I am only tracking down one bug that is bothering me.

I have written the structure for remotejoy for a linux system like ours and I am receiving signals from my wireless joystick.

I have a prototype battery pack running for the NSLU2. According to my calculations, the portable system should run for about 4.5 hours on a charge. That is powering the NSLU2, an 80 gig usb drive, the wireless joystick, an APC wireless access point, a 1 gig microdrive, and a palm pilot.

Oh by the way, I have an old palm pilot I had laying around functioning as a display and keyboard control unit for the NSLU2.

I am working on that software to make it talk to the PSP so a PSP can be the keyboard and display for control of the NSLU2 and eventually the xm4 system.

The system is tying together. I am working on another demo video to show wireless access to the whole system.

I hope these updates are keeping people interested, this is a great project, I just never realized how big it was going to be.

Take care - have a great day

Yes there is a very simple way to add bluetooth to our project.

You plug it in. You can use any one of the inexpensive bluetooth usb dongles that are out there
that start at $5.00.

There is already a bluetooth stack for linux. And yes I have it on my list. I wanted to use bluetooth headphones with the PSP.

We are looking at defining packets that audio can be shipped from the PSP to our interface and then sent out the bluetooth interface. It would also work the other way, to be an input.

We are working on defining standards for communication to the PSP right now.

I already know someone else that is working on a divx decoder for the PSP right now.

That is what this is all about. If you learn to program then you can add on feature to this system and make it do what you want it to do.

Status update.

Been working on the board layout for the xm4 usb 2.0 high speed usb daughter board. It is coming alone good. When the first layout is done I will release the pictures here of the layout and the schematics so people can see what is going on.

Still working on that bug in nethostfs. I am chasing down a random error that causes the PSP to crash during a file read. I just wrote a whole bunch of testing code to try and trap the error so I can find out what is causing it.

I am thinking that the portable power supply will just be a 12 volt 5 amp gel cell. Then we will just wire up several cigarette lighter sockets. This will allow us to plug in 12 volt to 5 volt power adapters. All it will take is very little soldering and the power system will be modular to be able to add additional outputs when needed. That way if you are using Ipods or any other things you can just plug them in and charge them.

The charger has a cigarette lighter plug on the end and just plugs into one of the sockets to charge the main battery up.

Depending on what extra you want to plug in Radio Shack has all these really cool power adapters to fit everything from laptops to cell phones, ect.

If you want to build your own power supplies then I will also post the schematics for regulators using the LM317 adjustable voltage regulators.

I have shot the next round of video demonstrating the nethostfs and the PSP. I am editing it so that it will be better quality and I will post it soon.

Thats it for now.

Have a great day.

I have a couple questions if you wouldent mind answering. They are simple yes or no questions. When i finish modding the NSLU2 and add a battery will i be able to take the NSLU2 and my psp and my storage device(ipod or external harddrive or whatever) to where ever i want and load up any game and play anywhere as long as i have the NSLU2 with a storage device connected? Also do i need a wireless usb card to connect my psp to the NSLU2 or is the wireless usb card you are talking about just for others to connect? I am assuming that my psp plugs into the NSLU2 and thats how i get to load my games and the wireless usb card would be for me and 10 other psp's to connect to it wirelessly? Also do you have a rough estimate on when the battery will be done because im going camping this weekend and i really hope you can get it done. Even if it is something really simple like running the NSLU2 off some 6V batteries.

There are two forms of the software.

usbhostfs where your psp connects through the usb connector to the NSLU2 and you run wired to the   NSLU2.

nethostfs where your PSP connects through the wifi of the PSP to a mini wireless access point. This mode would support up to 10 PSPs at the same time.
You walk into an area, turn the system on and any other people in the same area can connect to your mass storage system if you want them to.

Both modes are totally portable for about 5 hours of operation from the battery system.

Yes I am taking video and making a tutorial right now of the battery system. I will post it later tonight.
The system runs from a 12 volt battery. Uses cigarette lighter sockets so if you have a cigarette lighter plug to power your PSP you can.
The power supply for the NSLU2 and the USB hard drive can be purchased from Radio Shack.

You only have to do some very simple wiring of the plugs to the battery and you are ready to go.

Status Update:

I have posted the tutorial for the Battery Pack for the NSLU2 and associated peripherals.
Everything will run off this battery for about 4.5 to 5 hours at full tilt with wireless running.

If you shut off the access point and run usbhostfs then you can run for over 5 hours on a charge.

I am not done with nethostfs for release, I am still chasing that bug. I had several requests for the
battery power system, so I was working on that.

I have a video I am editing now that shows the battery system in use with the access point and
running nethostfs so the entire thing is portable and wireless. I will finish editing it and get that
posted so people can see it in operation.

I do need to finish debugging the nethostfs and release that for the next software install. This is my next priority and will stick to it.

Then remotejoy is the next one on my list.

So that is the status of what is happening. The tutorial for Battery Supply has been added to the main tutorial string USB HOST/MASS storage project.

Have a great day !

Status Update.

Testing the Nethostfs, it looks like I have found the bug and will finish testing of Nethostfs.

I have a new part that will double the time the portable system runs on batteries. You will be
able to use a battery that is smaller or use the same battery I am using and get 9 to 10 hours
or operation on a single charge.

This is a switching power supply that gives 92% power transfer without loss do to heat.

It will run from 9.0 volts up to 16 volts

It will give 5.0 volts at 6. amps and
12 volts at 2.0 amps

With a set of plugs for the different devices it can supply all the power needed for anything you
want to plug in

Have a great day !

I am concentrating on the tutorial for nethostfs for the NSLU2.

As soon as I release the tutorial, everyone will be able to build NSLU2 from the modified
source code. I would much rather people work from the source code and see
what it takes to put the system together.

Much more satisfying to make it than just slap it in.

Later, Have a great day.

Currently until I get another shipment I have used all the xm4 boards on my other project.

I will not be getting more for another couple weeks.

Thanks for shipping that stuff.

BTW believe it or not I am running a web server on my NSLU2 at the same time I am doing
program development.

Not much progress, Had some other fires I had to attend to for work.

Still writing up the install for nethostfs for wireless connection.

I decided to do an install program as well as step by step build the
software yourself. For the people that are just in a hurry to get it
running.

Seriously, I spend more time doing the documentation and step
by step tutorials than I do developing. But I want everyone that
has a desire to work on this to be able to do it.

Take care, Have a great day.

And I thought I wrote a lot in college.

Yes I am still working on the tutorials.

I have other people read them first and make sure I am not talking over
the heads of the people I am trying to write for.

I work so close on the project, sometimes I forget and take
things for granted that someone should know something they don't

I will make sure that the tuts are ready asap.

Added a new project to another of my lists.

Breaking down the code on the PSP headphone serial ports.
So we can plug in external control devices to that port and use
them to control the PSP.

Thats it for now, working away on the tuts and software for this
project.

Have a great day.!

I only wished we had things like radioshack in the UK ... well we do but they cost like 4 times more than in the US.
