PSP Phat Direct Contact Sound Reactive Triggers By Jumbo

Introduction
Ok so this is my first tut and I hope it helps everyone that
needs help doing sound reactive triggers the Direct Contact
(Or Noob) Way.
Enjoy!

Parts Needed
-- PSP
-- 2x 603 SMD Led
-- 30 Gauge Kynar Wire [Two Colors is Best]

Tools Needed
-- 15-30 watt Soldering Iron
-- Solder
-- Screwdriver
-- Flux
-- Electical Tape

Average Time To Complete- About 45-60 Minutes

Difficulty Rating-3/5

Step By Step Tutorial

Ok so use PSP Disassembly Tut by Kenshinffx which can be found
Here
Until you are at your mobo.

Ok so Now you need to unplug your speaker.

I use the right one more ofter but either one works. So now that
should look like this.

Ok so now heat up your iron get all you leds out. While waiting
for your iron to heat up you will need to get 4 pieces of wire.
Two will go to the Right Trigger and Two to the Left Trigger.

Like So.

Ok so after you wire your leds to the wire you have to wire it to
the back of the speaker. The black wire leads to ground or
negative and the gray leads to positive.
Like this-

So then when that's wired the back of your speaker should look
like this-

Now you drill the triggers. You should use a 1/16 or 1/8 bit. I
didn't have a drill near bye so I used a dremel but either are
fine. So you drill a hole in the middle of the trigger not to far
though just enough for a bit of hot glue and an led.

When done they should look like this-

Now just put a dab of hot glue on the led and stick into the hole-

Now just route your wires. It doesn't really matter but here is an example-

And I found it better if you put some tape over the wires to keep them in place.

Now We just need to put it back together :)
Put on your LCD Cage and screw it in. Now every time you put
something on after modding ALWAYS TEST IF THE PSP WORKS! It would
really suck if it all together and you notice it doesn't work
right?

Put In your LCD
No picture i am looking for one :P

Put on your home bar-

Put on your faceplate-
Now after your put in every screw test that the PSP turns on and
the leds too if they don't its a short.

Turn it over and screw in these screws-

This image is from Kenshinffx's Tut.

Now Turn On your PSP And enjoy your easy to do Sound Reactive Leds!

This is a Video on how they should Look!

hey nice tutorial, this will be my first psp mod, just wondering if they are bright or not cuz i was considering to get the board, but if it does the same thing then theres no point right? So is that how bright your tutorial ones are? Also does the brightness depend on the led colour? ty

There really isnt a limit but ive had 10 hooked up to one speaker with no problem.

And No.

All you need to know is that Black wire is ground.

Well those are perfect leds. What color are you using? And you might have polarity wrong.

those leds arnt the ones i bought but i might get them...i got mine at the local electronics shop. Mine that i have in now are blue ones...perhaps there is not enough voltage at the speakers to light the led..?

when the leds polarity triangle points the the right, the flat side on the left is positive rite? (just making sure sorry if i sound noob)

What other led lights would work? I've looked everywhere.

Usually a Dip Switch, but they are like 5 in a row and you have to cut them with something. I can sell you one for 1$.

there is a difference, i dont know how to explain it, if there like a audio track where the left speaker is loud, n the right isnt, then the right is loud, then the left, like some beat thing and if u solder one led to each speaker, then the led, like will alternaternate brightness between the two...idk if someone understands or if someone could explain this better.

there is a difference ...... if u wire it to only one.. you wont be able to get 3d or stereo sound reactive lights... it just would be mono sound reactive...... and also i think that it kinda unbalances the psps sound system so i like to have like 1 on 1 or 2 on 2... or whatever...

thanks chase for this sig =)

you speakers is stuffed is my guess...seeing as there not working you could try cutting one speaker off and doing the mod....its sorta simpler cept you will still have no sound. you could buy replacement speakers like off ebay or something too if you want. just make sure its for the right psp (phat/slim)

It might be a little to thick to close but if you keep it neat it could work,

You should just get some Kynar wire

Just the regular 3mm LED's from radio shack?

Those you probably dont even have to solder to the LED...just strip the kynar wire and twist it around the LED wire and tape it.

I used the 0603 SMD's from the acidmods shop...shipping so expensive though. Came up to like $49 and i only ordered $10 worth of the SMD's.

Thats a good price for them...I cant buy from them though, theyre shipping info is glitched won't let me choose provinces from the drop menu when i select Canada as the country still stays as states.

Theres a place 15 mins from me that sells them for i think either .25 or .35 but they dont have them in stock and wont order them in cause they have to order 2000 of them. Let me know if you know of any other good ones to purchase from...

I am pretty sure it is legal to sell it on ebay afterwards.

As much as I know, you can do whatever you like to your PSP after you pay for it, but for resale? Well idk.

You'll find out if you put it up there and they take it down :p

:eyebrow:I thought that the best way to get the LEDs working is with an LM386 amp and some resistors. So for this mod, the LEDs don't need resistors? Also, I heard that there was going to be another mod for a switch to turn the LEDs on/off with one of the buttons on the menu bar using an IC and a resistor, but this was quite a while ago and I never saw the mod posted, though I saw it working in a YouTube video by lordnico. I don't have a PSP but I managed to make the mod for one of my iPods. It works well though it uses a 9V battery and shorts out a lot from bare connectors on the IC. Anyways I hope the tutorial for that mod comes out eventually.

whats the voltage on psp's speakers? i found that on some 603 smd's the  forward voltage is 3.0v and on others its 1.8v like here: http://www.unique-leds.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=1735  so that green led would blow up or something if i connect it to the speakers?
And also, can i use 1206 smd instead of 603?
