Slim/Phat led mod difference
« on: October 23, 2008, 01:06:59 PM »
Ok, i'm sure other people here have noticed that there is a difference between the Phat and the Slim led mods when using a sound chip or the soundboard at wired input. for some reason the leds on a slim is very brite, so much so that the leds hardly pluse as they should. The phat (from my experiance) has never had this problem. now both power points that you solder the + wire too on the phat and Slim are 5v point.

So why are the leds briter on the slim? Do you need to use different resistors on the - and + wires going to the speakers? i would check it out with a multimeter but mine is out of action (and the fact that i've spent the whole day trying to get this to work, without any luck).

no but when u solder on to the mobo on the phat u solder on to a 5v point so the only thing that i can think bout is that the slim has more voltage coming from the speakers (they r louder)

thank u P3nnywise for the sig

then i have no idea wat it could be but some where there is a higher voltage on the slim
wat happens when u don't have the slim on full volume does it look better

thank u P3nnywise for the sig

no, they are still very brite on low volume.

I'm not sure if they are, because when you directly add leds to the speakers on a slim, the leds are not always on, unlike the phat. maybe we need to add a resistor to the + led wire. man my head hurts.

Does anyone else on AM have any ideas?

There is more current coming from the speakers probably.

i think your right. i've looked at everything else and i'm still no closer. if i had i had a working multimeter i'd test them, but the thing is dead. i normaly don't ask this sort of question but if anyone is currently modding a slim and have a multimeter, could they plz test the speaker point to see what there kicking out power wise? from that i or other people can work out what resistor to use.

I recommend purchasing a kit of 0603 smd resistors in various values  :winker:

ok i've tried using Mactastic Mendez tutorial on how to work out resistors but i can't get my head around it (i was never good at maths) if i were to get a reading from the psp slim speaker points, could someone help me out with the calulation.

I'm happy to learn how to work this  :censored: out, but this sort of stuff will take me forever to learn properly.

Yeah.
Are you talking about ohm's law?

Once you have the details tell us, but you can probably just put it into an online led calculator.

Thanks mate, i'm working on a slim at the mo, so i'll get the old multimeter out and test the points after i've had chrismas Dinner (don't ask, i know it's only Nov, lol).

I found something out if u add more leds like 4 on each lm386 chip u have they react better

EDIT
I found something else out when u do the lm386 on the right speaker it reacts better and doesn't explode my red leds but on the left it does  :eyebrow:
