why do we need a razor x board?

ive been looking at the tuts and they all have a razox x or a2d board. Why do we need these is there any reason apart from making the second nub thinner?.

to convert the current nub to digital.  Since it's an ANALOG stick you can't just send the signals into the facebuttons because they are DIGITAL.

Just think of turning it into four switches which each switch to ground.

I think you need a definition of analog and digital in this sense to be able to understand it.
