First time building a pc

Alright so my dad picked up something like a 5 year old mobo, cpu, etc. and everything. He hooked it up and everything and he said that he's willing to help fund me if I wish to upgrade it. BUT, I know almost nothing about computer hardware, so anybody know any good resources (books, websites, etc.) that will teach me basics of all those slots, compatibilities, plugging stuff up, how to build a computer, etc. Basically, a book that will teach a beginner all the basics he will need to know to build his own pc.

Modbrothers.com , bit-tech.net ask questions hear. Chances are if it's 5 years old your not going to be able to find too many parts for it. But it might be good to learn on.

I wouldn't want to fool around with a 5 y/o computer anyways. But, its better than nothing

I have a 3 month old PC quad core 3gb of ram, and a geforce 8500 video card (something like that), but I feel no need to upgrade it and I'd rather not mess with a good/decent computer first time around. Oh well, once I figure out what different connections mean, motherboard types, etc. then I can give you guys more info about my computer and what i could possibly do. Probably not much but oh well. I believe it has an integrated video card, and a maxed 2gb of ram.

I messed around with a 500USD Computer first :\ and nothing went wrong, hell, I just took chances, never read danged book or online resource, it was just common knowledge not to touch the sentive areas and presto, I am now building builds for the family and myself.

I just don't get all the different sockets and compatability issues with mobo, CPU, etc. I will probably just screw the upgrade idea cause it's so old and just do a simple case mod... Getting a dremel soon :tup:

Find out what ports it has, like what ram sockets SDRAM? DDR?

PCI? AGP?

SATA? IDE?

My pc is about 5 years old now, and I have only upgraded one part, my old 6600gt or something to a x1650 pro (agp) about a year ago, and it runs CSS and L4D at about 30-60 FPS

Quite suprised actually, and it was a budget PC when it was first build, its even got a 10K RPM Raptor HDD, they still cost a bit, i might use it for my new PC im building as its installtion drive

MoBos with an intergrated card mostly still have a slot for a graphics card, if your PC is about 5 years old, im guessing it will have an AGP card

Fortunatly, there are still come decent AGP cards (6800 Ultra, X1650 PRO AGP)

Check the manuals or use a program on your pc to check to slots

I got CPUZ I think that will tell me. Thanks. I will post back once I figure out what slots are available, and maybe somebody could help me with choosing out some parts :)


Okay I go some info:

CPU: Socket 478 mPGA

RAM: DDR


That's all I could get though... Any program recommendations to determine some mobo sockets? I suppose I could take pictures of my mobo too if I need to.


Oh and is this a good socket 478 cpu? Only one on newegg, runs at 3ghz and apparantly has good OC capabilities. I have no clue how to OC though so this might be a good time to learn...
