10K RPM HDD, Is it worth it?

Just wondering for my future PC build, is it worth it, this is my situation, ive got an older 80GB raptor HDD at 10K, it isn't that much space for a gaming rig, so is it worth it to take my older raptor and use that as the windows hard drive on my new pc build to make it faster, or to spend £150 on a 150GB version of the raptor or is the difference unnoticable and might aswell just go with a cheaper 500GB 7200RPM

(If im using the raptors, i woulda had a 250GB or so media HDD aswell)

EDIT: May I add, what is faster, a 10K or 2 HDD's in RAID 0?

well, yes a 10,000 rpm hard drive does have much faster access times and it is better for gaming. I would recommend buying a velociraptor if you can find it in your budget. Or if you want something for serious speed I saw a 32 gb ssd for like $100 somewhere.

Erm what I would do is sell you old raptor and use the money to buy a higher capacity one (although you will probably end up spending a couple of your own quid chucked in too).

I could do that, I could sell it to my brother

Although I could always buy another one of these ones (they still make them and sell them) for about £120 and put them on RAID 0, serious speed

I don't think you put 2 different hard drives in raid0...

You can, but it's a waste, the total space available will only be as large as the smallest hard drive.

Yes, its the simpliest form of raid 0

Also if you had 3 HDDs, all identical, and put them in RAID 0, would it be even faster?

Instead of the 500GBs, you should get the 2 WD 640GB black edition. They are supposed to be faster than 500GBs.

Yep, if your controller supports it, i heard you can run as many HDDs as you want in RAID 0

For a decent sized one (250GB) it costs about £550

So for proper space but in SSD (4 of em) that will be approx £2200

Way too much on hard drive space

Well in the US, its only $5-$10 more for a 640GB green edition. I believe that 2 640GBs in RAID0 is faster than 2 500GBs in raid0.

I found that no UK sites sell the black edition (but green edition?) so that means I have to get it imported from US, which has ridicoulous taxes and shipping charges

It costs about £50 to import something safely from the US, although it costs me a fiver for the same service but to send over there?

No it's not a big deal, if you really want to get for gaming purpose, make it raid, dual hdd

Although this is for my gaming PC, which I will use for work and design, but I might even buy a third HDD to store important files, or just regulary back it up to a DVD or USB stick or my laptop
