Diet

Squid possess a beak-like structure, used for the consumption of food. From the shape of that beak, it is evident that they primarily subsist on seeds, which they break with their specially adapted beak. Best modern theory suggests that, nightly, the squid sneak onto the shores in search of theses necessary staples.

It is unknown where the giant squid find suitably giant seeds. According to a simple extrapolation, it is clear that they consume a seed between 12 and 18 feet (4 to 5 meters) in length. Speculation is that they consume cadillacs, crushing the steel exterior and sucking out the juicy meats within.

Some few fringe scientists dispute the sneaking onto the shore theory, but these groups are largely discredited in these modern times.

Mating Habits and Reproduction

It is known that the adult male squid attracts a mate with the highly erotic "dance des jambes" or "dance of the arms." It is believed that it is this dance which accounts for the sirens which gave Ulysses so much trouble, with the word "dance" being persistently mistranslated as "song." The dance's eroticism is well known to cross species boundaries. It is tragic, and yet ironic, that the greek sailors who did leap overboard would inevitably discover that the dancer was the male of the species.

When a mate has been attracted, of the right species, the paired squids proceed to exchange genetic material through a process known as "squirming". This activity completed, the female deposits fertilized eggs on any handy surface, and both depart.

Upon hatching, the newborn squid, referred to as "armlings", must immediately fend for themselves in a hostile sea. For the first few weeks, they survive of algaes and plankton, before their beaks harden, and they begin the lifelong ritual of nightly on-shore sneakings, in search of seeds.

Birds do it. Bees do it. Even educated fleas do it, the Cole Porter song goes. But there's nary a mention of the giant squid. Well, the mammoth mollusks do it too -- but in their own peculiar way, according to a report by Mark D. Norman and C.C. Lu, of the University of Melbourne in Australia, in the Oct. 16 issue of Nature.

A female giant squid captured off the southern Australia coast had sperm embedded in her arms, the researchers report. That indicates that male partners, which grow to lengths of 45 feet, use their nearly three-foot-long "muscular" appendages to stab females and deposit sperm in the wound, "potentially under hydraulic pressure," the researchers said.

Females may store the sperm for long periods because "encounters with male giant squid are infrequent in these dark depths" where the tentacled creatures live, some 1,500 to 3,000 feet below the ocean surface. When they're ready to fertilize their eggs, females may somehow "peel open" the skin covering the sperm, or perhaps "the sperm may migrate to the surface on hormonal or chemical cues," the researchers write. "Alternatively, the female's skin might degrade on spawning, exposing the embedded sperm stores."

Curiously, a male giant squid caught off Norway in the 1950s had sperm embedded in its skin. "Another male may have injected" the sperm "while attempting to impregnate a female, accidentally `riveting' a co-suitor," the researchers write. "Alternatively, the male may have literally `shot' himself in the foot."

In the violent tangle that is sex between giant squids, almost anything can happen, including accidentally injecting yourself with firehose-pressure blasts of sperm.

The report goes on: "Although mating has never been observed in giant squid, it is thought that what happens is that the male injects his sperm packages into the female's arms. The process is likely to be a fairly violent affair as the female is probably not that keen on being injected. This is a problem for the amorous male as females are normally a third bigger than they are.

"But males get round their inferior size by being endowed with a particularly long penis, which means they can inject the female without having to get too close to her chomping beak. The male's sexual organ is actually a bit like a high-pressure fire hose and is normally nearly as long as his body - excluding legs and head.

"But having such a big penis does have one drawback: it seems that co-ordinating eight legs, two feeding tentacles and a huge penis, whilst fending off an irate female, is a bit too much to ask, and one of the two males stranded on the Spanish coast had accidentally injected himself with sperm packages in the legs and body. And this does not seem to have been an isolated incident since two of the eight males that had stranded in the north-east Atlantic before had also accidentally inseminated themselves.
