Power supply question
« on: January 27, 2009, 10:28:35 AM »
A friend of mine has an emachines computer with a 300 watt power supply and the following specs:
-intel 2.8ghz dual core cpu
-2gb ddr2 667 ram
-250 gb sata harddrive
-PNY geforce 8400 video card
-wireless pci card
-intel motherboard made for emachines

the motherboard has an ATX 2.0 connector( 24+4 wires) the power supply is a 300 watt ATX power supply(20+4 wires). is 300 watts enough to power this setup? She is having problems getting the computer out of standby and charging her ipod.

Tell her to get 500-600 and she should be better.

Also,
"-PNY geforce 8400 video card (fake nvidia geforce)"
Not fake... How is that fake? PNY makes nVidia card.

First off That Made me lolz SO much... PNY is a Licensed Manufacture of The nVidia Chipset, So Not a fake.

Well Was anything add aftermarket?  Im assuming The 8400GT was, A 300Watt is a standard  stock PSU, if you add after market upgrades new PSU is a Must..  a 450Watt will be fine anything higher is just over kill.. (if your not planing on upgrading it)

I assumed it was fake because of how it is built. It came with a cheap heatsink and fan on it. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6600 in my other computer and it has a bigger heatsink. Why would a faster video card (geforce 8400) have a smaller heatsink than a geforce 6600?
8400

6600

Umm That is what We like to call Low profile video cards... Mainly for Smaller PC cases..
But Yea get a 400watt PSU every thing should be Fine that is if its a power issue. but also Try to run scans for any intruders(MalWare/Adware...ect)  But I would like to know is did this start to happen after the card was installed if so its a power issue if not its malware.

There is no malware.adware on the computer. I think its the power supply because its main connector is a 20 pin connector and the motherboard power connector is a 24 pin connector. I am going to give her my 400w power supply and see if that fixes the problem. The motherboard was taken out of a computer that was assummed to be broken so the motherboard is probably the problem.

If the motherboard uses a 24pin connector, you can NOT use a 20pin connector PSU.
It must be a 20+4 pin PSU.
