Introduction



Hello fellow Acidmodders, This is my first tutorial ever its for my latest mod sound reactive LEDs with a single added component, its a 2n2222 transistor. I decided to figure out a new way to do this mod because when you apply the LM386 to a Slim psp the LEDs are very brightly on even with no sound and they don't react to the sound as much as we are are used to from the same set up on a phat PSP.





Parts Needed



1. 2n2222 transistor

2. LEDs

3. Switch




Tools Needed



1. Screw driver

2. Soldering iron

3. Knyar wire

Not too difficult if you have done a sound mod before its not much different.

Notes:


If you are using 2.6v Red LEDs you may need to use a 100ohm resistor between the power from mobo to the LED.
 
Step By Step Tutorial



1. Open up your PSP and remove the mother board

2. Refer to L0rdnic0's tut on installation of the sound board here  https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=20226.0 for positive and negative points for speaker and power for LEDs.

3.

Wire your transistor as depicted and route wires as a normal sound mod.

4. Close up your PSP be sure to test before you do to avoid striping screws.

FAQ/ Troubleshooting



If your LEDs do not turn on with sound check that your power switch is on for the LEDs or it may be a short in your wiring test the LEDs with a multi meter and check for shorts between wires.

on either side of the led, i always put mine on the positive lead of the led.

It is not necessary unless you have red LEDs I t works just fine without it.

but on the diagram it says your using 5v, and i've never seen an led that can stand 5v for too long

Its actually 3.6, I think Ill change that thanks. There are LEDs that run up to 12V depends what LEDs you use.

Let me first say that this is a beautiful psp.  Great job on the mod.  From a total Noobs POV.  The question I have is to ask if the 2n2222 transistor replaces the sound board previously used for the same mod?  Second is to ask if this mod is same on the Phat psp?

The WiFi switch has three leads. I will list them from Left to Right.

Anode +, Cathode - and Dead

So if u use the Cathode - and Dead as a switch. And solder the Anode + and Cathode - together. Will anything wrong happen?

i went to radio shack today and got me some transistor. it only came with a packet... some say 2n4404 and some say 2n2222 does it matter ? and 2n3904

very nice psp. do you think that you could do the same thing on a ndsl?? i dont see why not. i am just now geting into the ds moding.

has anyone been able to replicate this? everything i've tried seems to fail. i've tried to use both 5v and 12v lights with no success. i'm confused as to where ground would be, that is if it isn't speaker -? can anyone actually explain the science behind this? because i'm completely confused.


edit: seems my ccfls wont work with this design because even though the specs say they are 12v they function the same with only a 5v source, but then again.. wouldn't they light up either way? and after doing some research on NPN transistors i'm even more confused on your schematic? wouldn't you connect the speaker+ to the base, speaker- to the emitter and then the led and its source to the collector? because in NPN transistors the base controls the current flow of the controller not the emitter?

Does it matter what transistor you use?
Can you just use any NPN Transistors?
I only have 2N3904 and 2N4401 transistors on me...
They look exactly the same as a 2N2222

Nice mod. I would like to know how can I know which are the legs of the 2n2222 transistor that are the base, collector and emitter? Since it doesn't say it.
