TUT: Reed switch mod to 360 power button
« on: January 25, 2009, 05:54:28 PM »
Well a few people asked for a tutorial on this, including most of my friends, so I decided to make one. MODS READ: If this TUT is in the wrong place please move, thank you.
I did this tutorial after the fact so I had to take the 360 back apart to get the pics. I guess we need to get started.

Tools Needed:
Soldering Iron
Solder (duh :P)
Torx T8 screwdriver
Hot glue gun
wire stripper (if desired)

Parts:
reed switch
30AWG wire

First off, we need to take the case off. I'm not going into that because it is easy to google a tutorial and there is one on here already. This is as far as we need to strip the case. KEEP TRACK OF ALL SCREWS or the case might not go back on correctly.

After that is all finished unscrew the RF Module from the front and then disconnect it. This is a macro shot of the pins that we will be soldering to. The arrows point to pins 4 (ground) and 5 (power enable)

My reed switch didn't have wires so I had to solder wires to it but yours most likely will so I'll skip that. Our next step is to solder the reed switch to the RF Module. Positive goes to pin 5 and ground goes to pin 4. It can work either way but I like to match them up.

Almost there! We just need to find a spot to mount the switch. I found that the best spot is to mount it right above those pins with a generous amount of hot glue like so...

When everything is cooled off you can plug it back in and test it. If that checks out then reassemble your 360 and go impress some people :D

Maybe if you posted in the right board.

Mouser has some too, and digikey.

Dumb question, but why is your switch on a board?  All the ones I have found are not the are just loose.  Would this workhttp://cgi.ebay.com/REED-SWITCH-10-pcs_W0QQitemZ370147814279QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item370147814279&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 Thanks in advance for you help.

Yeah that will work, it's just harder to mount which isn't hard anyway. Also mine is on a board because mine came out of a gen 2 Rock Band controller (already broke don't fret, get it :) )

It depends on what revision it is. EA came out with several revised versions because the switches that were in them were flawed. If it doesn't have a warranty that's still valid, crack that bad boy open and find out. Here is a chart to go by. Hope I helped.
