Laptop CPU upgrade question...
« on: February 22, 2009, 07:55:00 PM »
I just bought an Acer Apspire 5515.

1.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 (socket AM2, not AM2+)
3 GB RAM
160 GB Hard Drive

Its a really good computer, and I am going to upgrade it as far as I can.  I need to know if this type of processor will fit in it.  The one I am looking at is an AMD Athlon X2 5050E (2.6 GHz, 65 nm, 45 watt, socket AM2).  Will this fit in the laptop, or is it still too thick for a laptop and is a desktop only.  Thats the only thing thats holding me back, but as far as I know, it should work just fine, but I want some other opinions.  I found several for $65 new.

yeah, the one in the Aspire is changeable.  I have had the keyboard off and had a look.  Its a slide-style socket.  looks to be just about as big as a desktop CPU.  Just wondering if the new CPU I am looking at is the same height, so that the stock heatsink and fan will fit back in properly.

UPDATE:  I just took the bottom panel off and removed the heatsink assembly and sure enough, its the same size as a desktop processor.  But I want to keep it low on the heat, so I am going to stick with the 45 watt 65nm style.  AM2+ wont fit it, so it will have to be a standard AM2.  2.6 GHz is the fastest I have found at the moment.  I am not looking to switch to another manufacturer of processor, so AMD is the way I am going.  I can add extra cooling to the laptop, so is there a suggested way to overclock the system (at least a little bit, not looking for anything HUGE).  I know I can use software to change the FSB, but I want to make sure it will work, before I blow it up.  lol)

Going to order the new processor tomorrow.  Called a few of my friends up and asked them about it, and got the same response I wanted.  So a new 2.6 GHz processor it is!

Also, PsychoticWolf, its an ATI Radeon X1200 series GPU, with about 1.4 GB of video memory.  Not sure what the chipset on the mobo is.  Not even sure where to find that out at.

I tried looking for the Overclocking Guru on Google and Yahoo, and never found it.  I DID download both CPUZ and GPUZ.  Both work great, now I am looking for the software to overclock with.  Any suggestions?

Looks like the chipset is also an ATI.  I should have figured.

Mainboard:

Chipset: ATI RS690/RS690M
Southbridge: SB600

Update:  Checked out the Guru3d site.  Very nice, will peruse through it.  Also, my processor is a socket AM2 (940).  Do you know of any faster processors that will fit in the socket with a 45 watt power consumption?
