Sony's in deep.
« on: March 15, 2009, 08:38:11 PM »
Some guy with a 100% positive feedback is selling a PSP TEST kit on Ebay...

And Sony has yet to take it off.

If someone who understands what the hell they're doing gets their hands on this, Sony could be in real deep.

Imagine if DAX got his hands on this....

Enough random babbling.

What you guys figure the consequences to Sony will be if this thing sells?

After reading about this last week on engaget I figured that our news team would have put this up on the news page. This is not the first time that one of these devices has made it to ebay. The last time was in 2006 and Sony forced its removal from ebay.

you have to understand its a test tool not a developing tool.
you can play unsigned code on it but not make code.
this is specificaly stated as a TEST TOOL.
you can make nothing with this.
this is specificaly designed for the developers to test their game they made on a different machine.
this is basically a computer they turned into a psp emulator.

can someone fill me in on what a dev kit does

A Psp development kit (or dev kit) allows a developer to write software (i.e. applications, firmwares, games) for the Psp.

So that would mean if someone got one of these, they could totally customize the Psp.

But this one isn't really a dev kit, it is a test tool.

As Slim Modder stated:

you have to understand its a test tool not a developing tool.
you can play unsigned code on it but not make code.
this is specificaly stated as a TEST TOOL.
you can make nothing with this.

this is basically a computer they turned into a psp emulator.

So yeah, basically its not a dev kit, only a tool to test new Psp software.

Please anyone correct me if I am wrong, thx.

It is stated as a test tool, but it might be possible to produce the signature that Sony uses, and put it in homebrew.

For now we'll have to wait because I don't know exactly what it can do, and nor does anyone here know, unless they work for Sony and have used it.

All we can do really, is speculate.

Edit at 12:40AM: It's done.

Shall add a quick update.

Ok seriously

1) Sony MADE these, and offered them for sale for a while to developers for a while when the PSP first came out. Don't believe me? What's that little word you may see on it starting with an S and ending in ony? If they didn't make it they could easilly sue as sony and umd are registered trademarks to there company.

2) It's main use is for developing and testing software (games etc) for the PSP.......WOW WE COULDN'T DO THAT ALREADY!!! MAYBE THE BUYER WILL START MAKING EMULATORS AND HOMEBREW FOR THE PSP

3) Remember, these were around when the first psp's came out (around, not on the exact date, this means im not sure) no one has confirmed or denied if they worked with psp slim's and thus the 3000, with all the firmware and hardware upgrades that have been made it may not be likely.

4) Seriously, how is song going to be in deep? They made these, which means they can build a better one and look up anything the community figures out.

5) I emphasise, these have been around for a while......so it's not going to mean anything hugely different, the original article was more about a rare item being on ebay really.

I really hate being the anti-guy and taking a whiz on everyone's fire but seriously........ I don't get why when someone does something good for the community, a lot of people find it to be the most interesting fact that OLOL SONY GOT PWNED OWOW WE ARE SO AWESOME I FEEL SO ACCOMPLISHED! Whilst it's cool that developers find these things what have sony really done wrong? Protected something they've made? well that's just plain wrong isn't it. It's like a house, people aren't necessarily going to break in and steal stuff, but you put up locks, install alarms etc just in case they do.

Ugh

Ok so it's a TEST unit.

got that.

The whole fact is that Sony doesn't go nilly willy and sell them at the corner store or Bestbuy.

Why?

Development purposes on a closed source system.

They sold them to developers they saw fit.

And unless YOU have physically USED one, you too can ONLY SPECULATE what it can and can't do, as I can.

Thats great that Sony made it.

They also created the signatures that are in all the official games.

You never see the source code going around.

Unless Sony actually doesn't care now, which it seems like it, it's still a screw up on their part.
