Hello acidmods

I am in the middle of finalizing my design for a PSP 1000 Dpad Breakout board. This will allow you to easily solder / piggyback the individual dpad button signals. It will be quick to install, low profile and easy to solder wires to.

Installation will only require you to file down part of the topside of the PCB and then insert into the Zif (ribbon) connector on the motherboard. The pcb wraps around the connector, fitting into unpopulated space of the motherboard. This design does not use fpcs and does not take up any space under the daughterboard. This simple circuitboard will allow you to build external controllers, analog controlled dpads and many many more peripherals without any soldering to the 0.5mm pitch zif connector. The item would be priced at around $10 to $15 and come preassembled. By following the installation manual you could be up and running in a matter of minutes!

Without further ado here are some previews:

Top:

I am hoping for this item to be sold through Sparkfun.com, and to aid with my market research, if you would be interested in such a product or have any thoughts or comments then please post in this thread.

Thanks.

Thanks for the positive comments so far. However I can only bring this product to market if there is sufficient interest in the product, so along with your comments please could you post whether you would be seriously interested in purchasing one of these items for the aforementioned price.

Thanks again

I would seriously be interested in this :D
I wonder if you could make one for the ABXY area as well, as it would make installation for dual nubs easy for people who are not that goo  at soldering

Nice, I think you should make one for the ABXY like treemty said, since many more people try to do the dual nub compared to external controler

Although I am quite interested in this

Okay I will take that into consideration, thanks.
I think that the main reason people do not try the external controller is because they cannot solder the connector (Which isn't that hard if you have a microscope ;) )

If a person cannot solder the ABXY points for the dual nub, they surely wouldn't be able to solder the wires to the razor either, so there isn't too much point, especially for the psp 1000.

Okay, this product isn't for the slim, and as such it won't work on a slim.
I don't own a slim and do not plan to create a pcb for one person.

At the moment there only appears to be serious interest from two people, I thought more people would want an item like this! If there isn't any more interest from members of this community then it would probably be in my best interest to abandon this entirely.

Absolutely my exact thoughts as well.

Perhaps an alteration of the design to accompany the slim would be better, for the slim is more recent, and to my understanding, the pinout of the 3000 is also the same as 2000.

Many more people could try doing dual nub to the 2000 and 3000, which might actually make it more popular.

Not to mention, It does take time for good ideas to catch on.

I know it's not for the slim, I'm just saying if you make one for the slim that I would buy it (and a bunch of other people would too)

I have a fat, but I would never mod it. However, if I did have a phat, I would definitely buy this to try an external controller. One for the slim would have more interest though :D

Okay, well with the current interest so far I don't think it will be possible to have sparkfun sell this item on my behalf. However I am going to put in an order with the PCB fab house for one (for myself to test out), if anyone would like to me to order a prototype for them along with mine then please PM me - the board will be $9.5 + postage (usually around 50p to almost any country). This will be just the bare PCB, so a connector will have to be soldered on by yourselves.

If anyone who owns a psp slim would like to work with me to develop a connector then I would happily oblige.

because mos't people have the ability to solder to the Powerboard, and alot cannot solder wires to a 0.5mm pitch zif connector.

Seriously you will need to make one for the slim with the D-pad and abxy. I asked jumbo and he wants me to pay him $30 just to do this. I'd rather pay $30 for this for d-pad and abxy then pay jumbo for something that with things can happen, like the wires could pop off in the mail and then what?

I'd say if it breaks in the mail, you send it back with a nice note explaining what happened and ask for it to be fixed. I'm sure you could get it re-done.

I mean still even thatt, like if I acedently break it off during modding or sometmes in the future if jumbo leaves AM or whoever I get to do it. I'd much rater have something I can hold in my own hands and do myself.

You want to know the solution to that? - Learn to solder

There isn't going to be a slim version from me.

This project can now be considered abandoned. To everyone who mentioned "slim" in this topic, I personally hate you.

I am just annoyed as I spent a long time designing this for others, not myself.

I have decided to take some pictures of my process for soldering the PSP 1000 ABXY, since that seems slightly more popular. They can be found Here along with pictures of "The perfect joint".

It wasn't just you who said it. Not to mention he did ask for feedback on the item itself, not suggestions for other things.

You're also the one who MUST voice your opinion on everything, and then complain the minute someone else opposes you or things don't go your way, you freakin spazz.

And Alien, don't get me wrong, but this is a really cool idea, it's just because of the lack of phat modders and the time you made this that it's receiving a lack of interest.

I do not complain I hold my ground and defend myself, Well I am not allowed to voice my opinion? everyone else does.  complain would be like "why is he picking on me make him stop please guy make him stop". Nah I'm only spazz 3 days a week ;)

Yea there aren't as many phat modders anymore if you could somehow make a ribbon cable you could make one for the slim to silver under along with the original then lead that ribbon cable to the spot uner the memory card reader for the pinout board.

When did I ever mention that it was your fault? - Try CTRL + F 'ing the word "fault", turns out your most recent post is the first and only result.

I don't think that this topic ElitePhyschologist83 is the correct place to post your professionally formulated opinion of my mental health, even though it is correct, I'm sure.

Why do you even need a breakout board anyway - what happened to your "friend the PROFESSIONAL SOLDERER  who can solder really really tiny things" - (Yes that is an exact quote). Besides if this professional solderer (LOL)  cannot solder a wire which has fully bonded with the traces, then how on earth has he earnt such a prestigious title?

Besides, you "noobs" (Yes correct terminology for most of you apart from aphex, darkshot and ghost) have missed the main point of my second to last reply:

There isn't going to be a slim version from me.

Did you notice the suggestive end to my sentence - "from me", well you obviously didn't but look again. Don't worry I will wait until realization dawns upon your precious little head.

Now if you feel this is a flame then by all reasons report it, I stand by all my points in this thread, and it would be no great loss to myself If this post were deleted. I can also get a whole lot nastier.

I have herd you say that you are not going to make one for a slim but I was suggesting it would be NICE never said you were I UNSTERSATND that you won't make one. I would rather have something I could do myself though and not have done for me. Just because your like a crazy insane solderer doesn't mean everyone is, I never said I WAS I admit it. Just because you can solder a tiny ZIF connector doesn't give you the right to assume anyone else who can't isn't as good as you.

Now that that's done, I got a question for you Alien: Approximately how thin would the PCB be before needing to be sanded down?

In what sense darkshot?

The manufactured pcb would have been 1.5mm FR4, and would need to be sanded down to approx. 0.4mm (I don't have a caliper but my pcb sanded around this thin seems to plug in fine. The copper clad which I sanded (Otherwise referred to as PCB) started out at around ~0.9mm.

Also question for alien,

Are you going to make these yourself with like a circuit board kit? or are you going to have them made for you by a company who makes custom circuit boards then sell them?
