why do I see on some computer builds, people use 2 of the same graphics cards in the same computer? what's the purpose of it?

SLI- better graphics i presume. using the power of 2 cards into 1.

using two graphics cards together in sli almost doubles the performance . It also makes it possible to use  two mid range cards to rival the performance of a high end card.
For example- two 4770 cards in crossfire mode can compete with a 4890 but are still cheaper than the 4890

also you can hook up 4 monitors with out using a VGA or DVI splitter (assuming that your card has more than one port on it)
