Calling All Modders....Airsoft Light Project
« on: June 13, 2009, 06:35:08 PM »
Ok so, I just graduated High School (Thank God!) and I can finally start modding like I've been wanting to for the past few years. I got an airsoft gun from my younger brother (he actually was being stupid and got it taken away lol) and it's clear. While laying with my girlfriend today I started to think about putting some lights in it. There are three variations of how i'd like to do it.

First:
When I c0ck the gun have the lights come on and then shut off once fired....basically so I can very easily tell if its :censored:ed even without being near it.

Second:
Have the lights come on when the trigger is pulled and shut off once released.

Third:
Just installing a switch and having them on.....or off lol simple enough.

Anyhow, I have taken some measurements and put them in this picture along with where I'd like to place the light. The most important measurement is the on in the handle in which I think would be the ideal place for the battery, because, well, it's the only place big enough.

I have installed lights in my PSPs before so I am familiar with the basics of wiring but it's been a while.

So if you can help me with any part of this at all please respond either via PM or posting a reply....if you would like to talk via AIM or Yahoo or something please PM me....

Thank you in advance.

thought I replied on this but guess it didnt take :dntknw:

So the thing about modding espeacially with a project like this is identifying the parts of the thing your modding that you can utilize in your mod.

I looks as tho this particular airsoft gun is a completely mechanical device, meaning there are no batterys or electronics for you to tap into. is that correct?

basically I would try to find tiny limit switches that you can mod into this project that will electrically tell you what condition the gun is in.  Once you can electricaly represent the states of the gun you can look into designing a circuit that will turn the leds on and off at the right times.

for the circuit you should look into 555 timers (singleshot configuration) and or flip flops.

Thats correct it's all mechanics. I was thinking of putting a small push button switch somewhere in the barrel so it knows when it is :censored:ed but the thing im most worried about is how to wire a AAA battery to the leds

putthe batteir either under the barrel or in the grip and if u want a light or lights to go on when its loaded put a coper pad/square on the pul back spring, its the last spring it gets held by the triger, and put another coper square at the way back of the gun so when u load the gun the touch and complet the circit and when the trigger is pulled the one coper square pulls away like a switch. hope this help ask me if u need pictures

ok first step: get this ugly orange thing out and lack it black!

second step: i see there is enough space in the front to get a laser pointer inside!

3rd step: if u have space probs with the batterie just take a saller one. i use a battery frum our garage opener, its not a button cell butt its about half sice from a AAA battery wit 1,2V i think. 2 of them will do it

4th step: to the connecters: just solder the battery, u cannot take it out anymore but guy, how much energy is nescessary to power a LED  :nono:

A couple of AAAs would be needed or you could stick in a couple of coin cells since you're short on space. Depends on the colour of LEDs. Reds and yellows don't require quite as much push (voltage) and will need about 2-2.4V depending on the spec. Blues, whites, greens etc require 3V or more.
I wouldn't solder to the battery either, bad things can happen apparently!

Yeah, I would recommend wiring up a circuit with a small 12v battery.  These small "doorbell" batteries are actually a bunch of small coin cells stuck together.  I picked some up at a radioshack for an external lighting project like what you are doing.

Sorry for the bump... I really am, but...

I know just the thing for you!

Google "Plecter Labs"

They make the sound and light controller for these:

Lawgiver Working Prop Final

Irvin plecter or "Erv" as he is known in the lightsaber community designs sound and light boards for custom prop weaponry.

The sound is ran on a micro SD card, that you can load your own sounds in.

You could put a switch under the hammer , switched on when :censored:ed. Red led or something in the slide or just under it, above your hand... I'll post a picture of what I mean in a min.

Here.. Maybe you can use a watch battery and appropriate resistor...
