Help with cutting a UMD Door?
« on: June 14, 2009, 04:46:04 PM »
Gah I'm going crazy... I've gone through about 3-4 UMD doors now and still haven't managed to make a single one work out. What's really killing me is the sanding. I have no patience, so I take my dremel and take out pretty much all the material except like 0.5mm... But then the circle's not quite perfect so I start sanding. Then I take off too much and my circle's STILL not perfect. Tips anybody?

Oh yeah, anyone manage to use UMDs with a 2mm jewel? People have said that Dazzerr's cut special, thinner jewels before, but he says he doesn't... Maybe i'll just have to make do without UMDs.

I've never had any trouble cutting a UMD door mines always a perfect circle :) I just hold the dremel in place with the sanding wheel on it and just ever so lightly feather tap the door over where it needs sanded.

Patience? it only takes about 10-15 min at the most.

If you don't want to do it by hand just get a kit/pack of those large drill bits, put it in a drill (I have a drill press) so I know that it will be 100% flat and it's just much easier. Anyway get one the correct size and drill it out but of course this way you can't save the center part.

Yup that's what I like about a drill press. Modding with a hand drill is just too finicky.

Um, Elite... By hand, I think he means by taking an exacto knife or similar tool, and going around the circle like 50 times until you finally go through. Then it only takes a bit of sanding.

I use a dremel for the whole thing.

Seriously...? You don't even do any finer sanding at the end with any kind of sandpaper? Damn man...

use a hole saw and very very fine sand paper.

Yeah I use a dremmel.

Cut out the center, than use a sanding bit to sand it down.

The way that I found the best was to take a cutting wheel and cut out the center, than take the sanding bit (the one I use is rubber with replaceable sanding rings) at a a low-ish speed (1 - 3) to take off the main plastic chunks, then speed it up (about 3 - 5) and take it easy when cleaning it up. Works like a charm for me.

And also, for sanding, I hold the dremmel between my legs while sitting, and carefully move the door with my hands.

Lol that's exactly how I do it except I just the "pen" attachment instead of holding the dremel in between my legs.

Why would you use a low speed to remove big chunks and a high speed for small chunks? O_o I do it the exact opposite way. I figured it out anyway, thanks guys. Turns out, when I thought I had messed up the circles, it was really that I hadn't sanded enough. Now it fits perfectly. What I do is take a cutting wheel, and cut a rough shape out of the middle, then take the sanding drum on 2-3 and make the shape into a circle while removing most of the plastic, leaving about 1-2mm left. Then I just put the dremel on 1, remove all the plastic, and then I just go and sand it with 100 grit sandpaper until it is perfect.

Reason I'd go faster is because there's less time for the sanding bit to actually grab ahold. It's a lil hard to explain, but needless to say, I figured it out.

I get it. But I feel that it's definitely easier to use a low speed, because it get's more control. Probably personal preference though.

Wait another problem - when I stick the jewel in, my door bends a little... Is this natural? Or should I sand a bit more?

Sand it down just a drop, it means the jewel is applying pressure outwards.

Yeah but now my jewel is starting to be loose... Should I sand it anyway, or does it have to bend if I don't want my jewel falling out?

Does it slide in early Bustin if so take super gel glue and glue it down.

Here's what to do if you think it will fall out:

On the inside of the umd door, there should be a sort-of rim where the jewel protrudes. Use hot glue to cover just the side of the ridge, and it should secure the jewel in place on the umd door.

Well it's not insanely loose yet, but I'm not sure if I should keep sanding. Do your doors have a slight curve to it?

by a curve, do you mean that yours is warped? Or that it is shaped with i curve.

like the door bends in towards the jewel because of the outward pressure.

kk. Now there's a REALLY slight bend. Like it's pretty hard to tell unless I take a flat object against the UMD door... And the jewel is getting really loose. I fail with hot glue so I'm really making a mess of things. Because I want to use UMDs, I'm making the jewel stick out a bit, but it's hard to keep the jewel in with hot glue without making it look bad. Help?

Hmmm... I don't really know what to tell you I've never had a problem with this just gently push the trigger on the glue gun and run a thin line of glue around the edge on the inside.

lol genitally....   :taunt:

Edit:  Son of a...  you edited your post...  now my mockery makes no sense.

Anyways, There must be some solvent you can use that would clean up excess hot glue without damaging the door..  no?

Bustin when you have your jewel the way you want it try putting tap on the front to hold it in place then I suggest cuz this is what i always use is super glue gel. Its a gel kind so its not messing and doesnt run like regular super glue. Try that it worked for me but apply smoothing use a tooth pick to spread it around the jewel.
