I hear that once you have it, fixing it permently is only a myth.
X clamp is probably the best semi long term, temporary fix.

I got one for $10us or somthing, and so far my fix is working well. I replaced the x clamps completly, putting screws in there place and new artic silver under the heat sinks. Then I attached more heat sinks (rather thickish bits of copper) to the big black RAM chips(?) on the bottom of the mobo, this also seemed to reduce some of the warping I was getting. Reflowed the mobo solder joints with a heat gun and dads work. Cranked the stock fans to 12v, then I added an extra fan where the gpu v2 heatsink goes. Had this baby running for about 12 hours all up and no problems.

If the warrenty sticker is still intact you an send it to microsoft and they will fix i for free. Just call them or go online www.xbox.com. That tut looks a little outdated. One of the best guides is probably this one: http://xbox-experts.com/e/tutorial.php?n=hybrid

you can resize by doing [ img width = * ] image link [ / img]

Remove all the sapces except the one between "img" and "width". Also, the * should be replaced with the number of pixels you want. 500 is usually a good number.

As for  your 360 making weird noises... Does anything else happen like does it turn on properly and everything, or does it just make a weird noise, no error lights, no nothing?

Well if your going to paint it..FIRST get 800grit wet and dry sand paper and give it a nice sanding just to rough it up a bit. Next get plastic primer and give it two coats leave each coat to dry over night. After that get spray paint (colors you desire) I used the brand Rustoleum worked like a charm. I gave it 2 coats...leaving each coat to dry over night. If you want a glossy finish you can use enamel...which will also protect the paint. But if you want the texture to stay the same use a flat color...for example if you want to paint it black. Use flat black instead of gloss black also flat colors contain enamel in it...so dw it won't get scratched easily.

Also do the 12v mod for the fans and add a duct over the heat sinks. Heres the link for the 12v mod:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=637955

and here's a pic of the duct mod...it concentrates the airflow onto the heat sinks:
