Should I attempt to mod my PSP
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:24:24 AM »
Last PSP I had is now lying in the bottom of my draw lifeless cause of my attempt to fix it.
What happened was: The PSP fell on the floor from the table and the case got cracked :S so the UMD door didn't close, button's were a little messed up and so on. I bought a new case of ebay, which was meant to be exactly like the original. It wasn't. Anyway, I replaced the shell, and I thought everything was fine, when I powered the psp up I saw that the analog didn't work (don't know why) and the buttons were weird (stiff on one side too loose on the other). The UMD door kept falling of every time I opened it :S.

So now I bought another PSP which was meant to be in a mint condition (I hate Ebay). Guess what, it has two horible (and deep) scratches on the middle of the screen.
So now I am wondering if I should replace the faceplate (and do the USB charging mod) or should I keep my unlucky fingers out of the insides of my PSP.

Another question: where can I find some good quality faceplates that won't screw me over (I live in UK), a link would be appreciated.
Or where can I buy the CAMY Dual Layer faceplates.

Sorry if I sound like a total N00b, I am more of a soft modding sort of a guy. :)

use dealextreme for your faceplates. they are very reliable though shipping takes a while.... I'd say you do it once more . However if ur not confident enough then you can ask one of the modders for hire here...

well my first psp i attempted to fix ended up in pieces and eventually lost all the parts but my second attempt with a new psp was successful so im pretty sure your not unlucky because i know many people who have tried their first mod probably killed there first psp. The face plate mod cannot go wrong almost anyone can do it as long as you have two hands im pretty sure you can get it done as for the usb mod its not hard as long as you can solder to a small confined space.

I know that those mods are basic, the thing I am woried about is the quality of the new faceplate and the fact that buttons might not respond the same way it used to.

BTW: what's up with the missing edit button >.>

the t1tle sais: PSP PHAT ASTERIX FACEPLATE MATTE BLACK REPLACEMENT 1000

and you have to copy the whole thing, I don't know why it did that.

If you ask me the forum needs upgrading :)

So, is it worth buying?

I heard that asterix faceplates are good and I do want a flat one cause all those fingerprints are just plain annoying

Well yes AFAIK asterix faceplates are pretty good. And flat black can look good with green led mods :)

Can you give me a link to the LEDs on mouser plz? :)
I sort of got lost when I saw how many different ones they sell
(thinking of doing the trigger mod since the PSP is getting opened anyway)

So, I received my asterix faceplate  and replaced it without a hitch (except for some dust particles that got trapped >.>)

And it seems that I was right with the buttons, home vol, select and start buttons are too deep and feel funky

Anyways... I am still waiting for my 50 SMDs (couldn't resist it was £3.95 + £1.00 for posting) and the kynar wire I am still to order the resistors.

Question of the day :): will the Hold button activated LED mod disable all the controls? And if it does how do I stop that :D

 You guys are :#1:

I see :), and what do I have to cut to use the hold switch AND have sound reactive LEDs without them being on all the time even though there is no sound and just flashing brighter when there is sound :) (I've seen mods like that - it didn't look pretty, looks like the LEDs are shorting out  :sadno:)

By now I must like a complete Noob

yea.... That mod is not for me :)

I am a tad confused about which resistor to use for the hold activated led mod . One of the calculator sites say I need to use 100 Ohm 1/4W resistor and another one say I need to use 6.8 Ohm with 1/8 Watts

I hope you can clarify that for me :)

I think that the supply voltage is 3.6V,
                     forward LED voltage is 3.1V,
Forward LED current is 20 mA

I want to have four LEDs in parallel (two in triggers, one under the directional pad and the other under the shape pad)

Somewhat like that:
