I was never able to solder to those black chips for some reason it would never stick.

Put a lot of fresh solder on it first. they are rather piniky.

Avoid radioshack like the plague for your LEDs, since you're in the states I believe http://www.unique-leds.com/ are pretty good. For UK and EU, my company is fairly good...
Anyway, what LEDs are you using? might be worth running 2 strings with a resistor. A bit of ballast always helps avoid runnaway (resulting in dead LEDs).

I get my 0603's from unique for a quick shipping.

However I don't like to buy my 3mm/5mm from their. I get mine from china with 100 LED's plus 100 free resistors for lke 8 bucks shipped.

I say go that route because you will obviously have more LED's but you will have enough to add to some friends consoles to make some extra bucks or for your console down the road.

I always use a resistor in case something does happen and the LED's burn out.

Keep an eye out there will be easy led board kits for the 360 coming on the market very soon. =)

PS..

Always solder to the 12v spot under the Power Supply. You have 3 hot spots and 4 neg's.  You try and draw too much power from anywhere else may draw power from somewhere else and it COULD cause you problems in the long run. Always work smart, not hard.
