so i am thinking about getting a car...
« on: October 06, 2009, 08:59:38 PM »
i found some ads on craigslist and i offered my ps3 with 2 games and a controller... they seem kind of interested and are sending me info like mileage and such soon

one is a 95 sunfire

the other is a 98 cavalier

assuming that they are similar in mileage and such, which should i go for (both are 5 speed)

fyi i know NOTHING about cars.

I seen the title of the topic and the first thought that came to my mind was "As apposed to getting a horse and buggy?"

I'd go cavalier however it would also depend on how much tlc each individual car needed.

Obviously you don't want a car that is going to cost more to repair nor a car that isn't dependable to run for you. So look at pictures, interior and exterior and then compare the miles and possible even mpg.

Best of luck in the trade.

thanks twist. they look to be about the same in and out (tho i think the cavalier has no carpet >.>) and rust is nonexistent.  i am just glad my bro in law is a mechanic and can help me out ^_^

No problem, once you get the mileage and such feel free to post them, and you could try google to look up the reliability of each car. Check out the mpg post it, and just over all look for a bit more information over all. It'll help you pick which to get. Who knows somebody might back out leaving you to only pick the other car. So wait and see, and a little bit of research. Always a good thing. Seriously though best of luck I hope you get the car.

(Hopes somebody finds his horse and buggy comment funny)

few things you need to pay attention to:

- the clutch, if it still shifts smooth and try the reverse thats the one that sometimes is f*cked up.
- drive a bit in high rpm an than check to the car if you see oil or something else leaking
- check the tank cap and the underside of the doors, those are the sport where there will come rust.

just a few things you need to pay attention to.

yea, thats your best bet..and I would advise start saving money, and be shuper glad if it lasts a year or two...but thats the best thing for younger gentlemen, start with a beater, learn to drive, who cares if you nail that sign or trash can thats what beaters are for...

i agree with matt.

or in my case you learned to drive in a truck when u were 12....lol

i advice a car with not to much torq or horsepower, because you will make accidents with it.

over here that would be at least 3000 euro i think.
for 5000 euro you got a beaty.

learn to drive a normal clutch, those are cheaper and more fun. trust me.

this was my fisr car (looked like it):

it was 800 euro and i spend 500 on it to make it perfect.

it could go arround 160km/h and that is verry fast for that kinda ride.

if thats a 1 litre micra it can go faster than 160 km/h as i have had mine at 110-115 mph. was scary as :censored: as in a car that small it felt like it was going to fall apart but it is really fun to drive - feels like a go kart

With a beater you should expect to spend $500-$2000/yr on maintenance.  I just got rid of my 99' Blazer and I think it cost right around $1500/yr to maintain it the last 3 years I had it.  It had 100,000 miles and I had front end issues, new gas system, waterpump, new brakes and lines all around.

I do live in a cold part of the US with lots of salt on the roads and winter driving, so maintenance is a little more here.  I your cuzin is a mechanic then you should probably do alright on maintenance costs, but realize that older cars dont just run for free and when you factor in price of fuel, you should expect to dish out a couple grand each year just to run it. (not to mention insurance)

get a diesel car, cheap and low in maintenance.

chives i doubt brake lines all arround, i think you mean the part that goed to the break itself.
if they changed all the lines than i would loll at them ebcause they are made from steel with a special coating that just wont rust.

deda you may very well be right, there was a split  somewhere in the rear circuit, however unless you have dealt with salt on the roads 7 months a year you havnt seen what corrosion really can accomplish.  either way it was $1800 job at the chevy dealer to get it up and running after the brake catastrophe so whatever the chevy book recomended it got.  normal mechanic may not have replaced it all around, but that was the chevrolet recomendation for that type of failure. 10 years on salted roads = rust and corrosion to the max.

i think the brake pistons jammed up and maybe the brake disks and brake blocks (idk the real english name) got replaced to.

you dont have to explain anything about salt and corrosion, i sometimes work for my uncle at his truck company and he has a few trucks that transport salt and i have to repair them, its a nightmare.

but 1800 is a reasonable price.

if you ever have any questions feel free to ask:)

I've got an '84 Corolla Sr5 that was my dads old car.  Still needs some work done on it, but it runs fine.  It's got around 208K miles on it, but that's only b/c of all the driving from Sacramento to L.A. he'd have to do to see my mom when I was born, etc.  It honestly doesn't cost that much to maintain.  I do all the work on it myself, oil changes, spark plugs, routine maintenance.  From my dad's experience though, I'd stay away from american brand cars.  One, the companies are all dying (Might be able to get a good deal, hint hint).  Two, he had 3 american brand cars, I don't know which, but he said they all broke down on him.  So I'm sticking by what he's told me.  I'd recommend a Honda or Toyota...maybe even a Kia or Hyundai if you could get one, but Honda and Toyota will hold up the best in terms of long life and low cost maintenance.  That's just my two cents

check the main brake cilinder it may leak, or your brake pistons are jammed

one thing no one has said about the sunfire (i have an 03) and the cav is that there the same basic car. they are a General Motors J body with more than likely the same ECOTECH in line 4 cylinder. that being said i would go with the one that has least amount of work needed
