Equations 101
« on: October 13, 2009, 12:14:12 PM »
Some of you have asked for equations of an electronic nature. I am here to help.

Basic Notation

V = Potential Difference (Voltage) [Volts - V]
I = Current [Amps - A]
R = Resistance [Ohms - Ω]
G = Conductance [Siemens - S]
C = Capacitance [Farads - F]
Q = Charge [Coulombs - C]
P = Power [Watts - W]

When i put two symbols next each other (i.e. IR) it means I x R. Here due to lack of ability to, i shall write division as I/R.

Equations

V = IR (Voltage = Current x Resistance) - Ohm's Law
Q = CV (Charge = Capacitance x Voltage)
P = IV (Power = Current x Voltage)

And from these two you can also deduct that Q = CIR, as V is the same as IR. Or that Q/C = IR, as V is equal to Q/C. Of course, it is not required for the vast majority of you to use capacitance equations, but i thought id cover all bases.

To rearrange these to the required unit, i make a triangle of the values.

for V=IR, i do this...          V
                                   I   R        <---- I x R, so they are next to each other.

now for example to find R, it is V/I.    Because V is over I, and an alternative way of saying to divide is to say V over I, in this case. I generally always announce division when i speak as [Value] OVER [Value]. Easy to remember, though i dont know if i explained it well.

Resistance, Conductance and Capacitance

Series Resistors

RTOTAL = R1 + R2 + .....

Series Conductors

1/GTOTAL = 1/G1 + 1/G2 + .....

Series Capacitors

1/CTOTAL = 1/C1 + 1/C2 + .....

Parallel Conductors

GTOTAL = G1 + G2 + .....

Parallel Capacitors

CTOTAL = C1 + C2 + .....

Parallel Resistors

1/RTOTAL = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + .....

If there's any more i can add to this, please tell me, cos im bound to have forgotten something. I could go into radioactive decay but i dont think us modders need to know about that :P

P = IV is a good one ;)

I Have Always Remembered it as "pie"  P = IE
E = Voltage or Electromotive Force
