3000 screen on a 1/2000?
« on: October 20, 2009, 10:20:06 AM »
Hi, I had an idea, but I have very little experience hard modding PSPs.  Would it be possible to replace the screen on a 1/2000 model PSP with a 3000 screen?

What I'd ultimately like to do is get a (hackable) 2000 mobo in a 1000 shell, using a 3000 screen.  Permanent CFW, 64MB ram, better screen, bigger battery, and my favorite of the shells (i like the curved and rough plastic back).  I may or may not decide to do any LED mods.

I would probably end up buying a used 2000 in working condition (as long as the parts work, outer condition doesn't matter), a 1000 shell (matte silver if I can find it), and a 3000 replacement screen.  Before I even start planning this though, I'd like to know if it is feasible to do.  I have soldering and some general EE experience, but I've never worked on a PSP specifically.

I do realize that it might be hard to use a 2000 mobo in a 1000 case with the speaker and MS slot position difference (not sure how easily they could be moved, if at all), but it's really just a thought.  If worse comes to worse, I could just use a 1000 mobo with a 3000 screen.

I have dealt with the 1000, 2000, and 3000,  I know the 3000 and 2000 are different than the 1000 screen.  I noticed the 2000 and 3000 are identical with the screen.  but i don't think the hardware supports it.  It might be worth a try

Yeah, I think I saw that while browsing around here.  If I was going to use a 3000 screen, it would have to be in a 2000 case.  I think I'd rather use a 1000 case, so the 3000 screen may not be an option for me.

I also think I saw somewhere that getting a 2000 mobo to work in a 1000 shell is more trouble than it's worth, is that true?

I don't see why you would want to put a 2000 mobo in a 1000 shell. The 1000 shell is much thicker. You can't put a 2000 mobo into a 1000 shell anyway. It is completely different. The speakers on a 2000 are placed in a different spot on the motherboard; at the top. The wifi switch on a 2000 is also at the top. It is not practical, and it won't work. And on a 2000 mobo, I think the UMD drive ribbon cables attach on a different spot on the mobo. I've taken a slim apart before down to the mobo but not taken the mobo out of the shell. And I can't even count how many times I've taken my 1000 apart. It's the only PSP I have  :cry2: The PSP 3000 screen won't work with a 1000 or 2000 PSP. And vice versa.

My main reason was that I like the feel of the 1000 better, but I wanted the 64MB ram of the 2000.  Plus the smaller mobo in a bigger shell would give me a little more room for mods and the like.  But I will make due with modding a straight 1000, thanks for the info.

Now another question, what would be some good mods to try out?  I'm giving it a gray/silver shell, and I'd like to do shoulder button lights (and maybe a jewel UMD door, dunno about that yet though) with a variable resistor (left inside) and an on/off switch in the battery compartment.  I'm toying with the idea LEDing all of the main buttons and putting them on a separate IO switch from the shoulder buttons.  What would be some other good mods to consider?  I'd like to leave the UMD drive intact for now at least, but other than that I'm open.

Edit:  Any chance a CR-3100 would fit anywhere other than the UMD drive?  I'm guessing not, but if it could, 64GB internal storage would be nice :)

Oh, also, the memory stick port on a 2000 mobo is on a different spot. The 2000 has the wifi card and memory stick port on the mobo, not as a separate chip.
