Thats an option i did it differently but it depends but if you havent so i would. But what i did is place a heatsink on this on chip behind GPU.

There's no 100% fix for ANY RRoD (unless it's because, for example, you don't have the a/v cable in. Lol)

no its not ok, you must have both, I guess you can do with all plastic, but you must have plastic washers where they contact the circut board.  what kinda kit did you order? that dont sound good

I have fixed 4 different ones using metal washers I got from B & Q and they're all still working and show no signs of stopping. Touch wood.

Well I only have one still in my possession  But I think I'll wait and see how it does before opening it up again and going to all the bother. I'll start buying nylon ones from now on I think though.

E74 is most commonly a (H)ANA chip error. (Sometimes it can be caused by the GPU.) But if not X-Clamps are pointless.

You really need 16 of each(nylon/metal) But it depends on the size of the washers you get. Some are thicker and only need one to space and most you use two(metal/nylon).

I would do the X clamp mod and then re flow the ana/hana chip. If you re ball the solder joints it will last you a long time to come.  I still don't get why people insist on sending to MS for repair...Yes it's free if you have a warranty, but why not spend 10-20 to fix yourself? Even when you send to MS it's still only a temp fix...It'll just RROD on you again. lol

If I was you I would focus on the ana/hana chip which is usually the main cause on E74. On all my E74 errors, I re flow the ana/hana chip top/bottom of the board and apply AS5 and the x clamp mod. It hasn't failed me yet. I also re flow all the chips, top/bottom of the board for preventative maintenance on all of my units I repair...Mainly because I offer 120 day warranty and I don't want returns lol

People sed to M$ because it's easier for people who aren't very good with electronics, or don't have the time to do it themselves. Also, M$ are professionals, why not? ya know?
