*HELP* smoke gray plexiglass
« on: November 03, 2009, 07:15:48 PM »
i was looking at a few xbox 360s with acrylic/plexiglass windows on them which is so beautiful on an xbox ive done this with my hardrive already so i kno how to cut it out and put it onthere yada yad but i was thinking of an idea of mabye somehow smoking the plexiglass with a black mist of spray paint (brainstorming) but my vision is to hve a plexiglass/acrylic window thats has a transparent coat of gray but still see through it. any ideas on how to get it like that without buying one premade?

is you want a smoked effect. try laying your plexy down flat and sanding the inside of it with very very fine sand paper... also do the sanding in the same motion and sand very lightly...
it should end up with a smoked effect.....
if not a very light misting of a grey spray may giv you the desired effect but again do it on the inside of the plexy...

um not sure never realy tried it on bigger bits of plexy...
i use it to act as difusers over leds on small squares of plexy...

i would say it turns out like a smoke effect but its not really transparent its mor translosent..... (spelling???)

You could also try Testors model car paint. Get some clear and mix in a little black to darken it a bit. Its an old trick people used to use to smoke tail lights on a car. I would test a small piece to make sure the paint does not distort the plexi.

5th has a good idea. Also, the window tint would be a great Idea, but again, it all depends on what color YOU are going for. I may not be much of and LED installer, but I know about painting and coloring an xbox!! I would say try both approacheswm as plexi is sorta cheap, and if you don like one, you could always use it on a friends, because there is always someone who is gonna like what you dont.
