What's the name of this motor?

I'm fairly sure they exist.

It's basically a regular motor that goes up/down (or subsequently left/right) instead of spinning.

Anyone know of these? I need one with a small footprint (1"x1" MAX)

Edit:
Using a flap, if you will.
Like it's a motor and it makes a flap, or something, move up and down.
Ideas?

umm is it a servo? i dont think it is but idk lol i know what ur talking about but cant think of anything besides servo.

Not a servo. Let me try to explain.

Instead of there being a spinning rod for the motor shaft, like a servo, it would be a rod that moves up and down really fast (depending on the motor speed).

Any ideas on how I could make something like this if it doesn't exist? Like, makeshift.

Only way i could think of making one is like a old steam train, attach a wheel to a motor and attach a rod to a peg on that, boom you got one that might work.

they are not motors. They are called solenoid's, well thats what they are called in the automotive business. I have them in my truck to pop the door open due to their being no door handles.

yea, you see it a lot at car shows. it's pretty cool looking if the person does the body work to remove the door handles all together.

no handles is awsome.

its even more awsome to see people trying to open the door but the motor is stuck and wont open the door.

"linear actuator" is something you could look up.  solenoids are a type of linear actuator.. generally they take a lot of power.  a servo with a small cam or some type of linkage would be lighter duty.

What could I use? Something I can control with PWM.

isn't a actuator the little bit that sticks out, like the actuator on a tact switch is the raised bit you press?

There's none that are as small as I need (<1") so I'm using a rumble motor from Radioshack, cutting the part that's on the shaft off, and using that motor with a circular disk type of thing and 2 rods to make it work how i want.
