25 watt solder iron... DANGEROUS????
« on: December 04, 2009, 07:55:18 PM »
I was reading and found that you are supposed to use a 15 watt soldering iron to put the led's in your psp . My soldering iron is a 25 watt i use for automotive work i was wondering if it is risky to use it inside the psp or if i should purchase a lower watt one. Anyone have any experience with this ??? :help:

I use a 15 watt for led swaps, and thats it. I use A 30 for everything else.If your not a noob to soldering, you will be fine with a 25 watt

yeah i use a 50W iron as well, the wattage really only has to do with how well the iron holds heat while touching other components. Not how hot it gets (unless its a temperature controlled soldering station like mine)

well to me it doesnt really matter the amount of wattage the iron has. What matters is if it gets the job done. For me i just stick with a 15W since that is what I currently have at home

The wattage of a iron doesnt really determine the temp. that it gives off (although it does make a small difference) but it has to do with, how fast it heats, how long you can use that heat, and how long it can keep that heat.

I use a 70 watt temp. variable but i started with a 25 watt weller :D

One misconception of soldering is people think your supposed to heat things. You should be able to get the solder connection FAST as possible with as little heat as possible. heat messes up electronics so if it takes you 20 seconds to solder on an SMD led while it can take someone else 2 seconds the person that takes longer, transfers more heat giving a higher chance to mess up the electronics.

15 watt is what i'm using now , sure it's slow but i'm seriously scared that i mess up my psp . 25 for me is for soldering on wires to LEDs . it really depends on what you are soldering sometimes .

Why not a 250 Watt Soldering gun?

I've tried to solder SMDs to a board with my gun and the copper tip became magnetic because of it's strong induction current through the tip. The SMD LEDs then got stuck on my tip because it was magnetized.  :eyebrow:

25 Watt Pin-Tip is the best bet.
