Bad laser...possibly. That would be my guess

I'm gonna have to go with GREAM on this. Try cleaning the laser and making sure everything is set right. If that doesn't work, try a new laser.

so... i got the xbox dismantled, everything looks fine. the 360 is a Jasper, (pretty sure ().()) with a Benq, and i guess the error is known as the Open Tray Error, (wonder why they named it that :D) so... anyone know of a tut on how to fix it? or do i need to buy an replacement laser, or just scrap the drive and buy a new one?

That's not the open tray error if it says the disk is unreadable. What's happening is it's attempting to read the disk but it's just unable to. Definitely try a new laser first (that's what I'd do).

Personally, I've never had experience with that before. I'd take the easy way out and just get a new drive. You can normally find one on ebay for around $20-30.
To make it easier on yourself, considering I don't think you'd have experience flashing a drive, make sure you get the same drive that's currently in the 360 and when you replace it, take the drive apart and swap the drive board (the circuit board in the drive) on the old one in place of the one that's in the new one.
This will give you a new drive while keeping the DVD key on it so that you don't have to flash it.

If you're still having problems after doing that, though, then you'll need to put the boards back in their respective drives and copy the DVD Key off of the old drive and flash it onto the new drive so that you'll be able to play 360 games still.

the lazer is bad pspkicks is spot on.

there is a small chance you can adjust the sensitivity of the lazer and get it to work, but not likely

Ah. Didn't realize a bad laser caused his new problems as well. Good to know.
