phenoptix or unique-leds for leds and digikey for every other component ever.  lol.  and lead solder is better in my opinion.  For detailed smd soldering I use either .015 or .022 diameter solder with a 60/40 or 62/38 mix of lead and tin.  though they sell some .022 dia. solder at radio shack that is like 60/38/2(silver) that works pretty well.

0603leds i get off of ebay. 30awg kynar wires, i buy from my local electronics stores (Sayal, AA electronics). and Non-lead is better in my opinion, less chemicals that are dangerous to respiratory etc

The only added danger of using lead solder is that it might get a little on you hands.  It is not a big deal, just wash your hands after using it and you'll be fine.  And that smell from solder is the flux boiling off, not dangerous and it comes in both lead and non-lead solder.  The lead does NOT boil off.  Trust me.  The boiling point of lead is (1749 °C, 3180 °F).

leaded solder is better than non-leaded but I'd recommend using a fume extractor or sitting a fan beside you as the fumes can be dangerous

basic stuff I like to be able to get it asap if I run out so wire, solder, irons I go to Rat Shack or Fry's. sometimes they're a few dollars more expensive sometimes, but I don't have to wait for things to clear customs in Hong Kong (I ordered LEDs off of ebay 1 time, shipping said 7-10 days, it took 2 months. Never again...) or something, and I don't have to pay for shipping. If I run out of wire or need a new iron tip I can get in the car and go get it...

LEDs and any other component or IC I get from Mouser. insane selection, fair prices, bulk discounts, and they're in the states (Dallas, TX I believe)...

Always use lead-free solder and RoHS compliant components... Lead solder fumes can be hazardous to your health and the is more prone to corrosion. Always use lead free rosin flux solder for electronics work. For modding I recommend using 0.02" diameter solder...

Ahahaha dude I've been exposed to so many solder fumes, and trust me. I'm not that screwed up.

You sure about that?

Look, it's not healthy for you and it is a safety concern. Don't use lead solder.

Lead interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially (and usually) permanent learning and behavior disorders. Lead is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems.

Lead poisoning is accumulative, meaning that the more exposure you have to it the more of it is retained in your body. Your body will not (and is not able) to remove the Lead from itself. Treatment is by Chelation therapy and treatment is usually administered intravenously, takes 2–3 hours per treatment, costs ~$100 per treatment, and often takes about 20-30 treatments.

Lead poisoning is serious and it does not take much to have serious effects on the human body. Why do you think that Lead paint is no longer allowed to be used in most countries? why do you think Leaded solder is being phased out? It's not a joke and your personal health should not be taken lightly.

jrfhoutx,don't be such a woo-woo,it's only a serious problem if you're working around lead on a constant basis a few hours a day,if you use a fan or preferrably a fume extractor you've got nothing to worry about.

Leaded solder performs so much better than unleaded.

yeah, and leaded solder really doesn't give off such bad fumes anyways.

I'm not being a 'woo-woo', I am making a recommendation to a member based on possible health hazards. It does not take a great deal of exposure to lead in order to experience ill effects (edit: in fact, if you are experiencing a headache after a soldering session using lead solder then you are already experiencing the beginning stages of acute lead poisoning...). many people who do participate in this hobby are young (making them especially susceptible to these hazards), are inexperienced (meaning they don't necessarily know the risks and dangers involved), work on limited funds (meaning they don't always have the option of having a fan or fume extractor), and take the advice of more experienced members here. Regardless of which type of solder performs better I don't think that many young people's parents would much appreciate our members telling their children that it's ok to use the leaded solder.

if this site is going to tout itself as a 'family site' then that needs to be shown in our concern for the health and safety of younger (and older) members not just saving their ears, or eyes (since we read the forums) from cursing and pornography...

indeed i agree with jr on the solder issue as lead is dangerous. i work in construct and we have lead men on site (i also do a small amount of lead work) lead work being lead, flashings around roofs, chimneys and things of similar nature.

yeah this is lead in a pure form so is alot more dangerous the lead based solder. but lead can build up in the blood system just from contact with the skin on a regular basis.  when working the lead we use heat occasionly and the fumes are very harmfull. the lead men (guys who work with it all the time) have to take regular blood test and if the level of lead in the blood system is to high they take up to a year off whilst on meds to reduce the level of lead in them....

anyway this is off topic a bit, but its just a warning to anybody who does choose to use lead based solder lead is hazardous.

@jr
Soldering is a possible health hazard,using a dremel is a possible health hazard,tinkering with electronics of any kind is a health hazard,especially considering the backlight on a psp outputs 40v ac,which is a pretty bad shock if I do say so myself.
And how exactly am I represantative of this site in its' entirety?
I never told anyone to go use leaded solder,I simply said it performs much better,all I recommended was to use a fume extractor if it so happens that you are using leaded solder.

The fact is that lead is not nearly as dangaerous as you think it is,the only case in which it is dangerous is when one is exposed to it frequently and for a prolonged duration.And modding consoles is definitely not frequent and prolonged exposure.

Thank you spurg...

@ryan:

This is ridiculous, and I am not going to argue with you about this. I never attacked you or said that you specifically told people to use lead solder. All I have done is point out proven health hazards of lead and recommend not to use it. I don't see why you continue to make such a personal issue out of this.

You are not representative of the site in it's entirety, but being staff of any sort you are a representative of the site.

I have to agree, lead solder can be dangerous, just don't breath the fumes and you should be all good.
Umm, I get all my modding stuff of nz rs components, since I get free shipping from there, other wise I would probably go with some other site. All my 30awg comes from a local electronics store, I have all the leaded solder I could possibly need already.

Don't mean to bring it up again, but the fumes from lead and non-lead solder are the same.  The fumes are from the flux in the core of the solder burning off.  This applies to both types of solder.  The boiling pt. of lead is over 3000 degrees F.  Much too hot for any soldering iron.  Though the fumes are not any worse in lead solder, there is still added danger.  If you forget to wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap, it can be bad, also, I would recommend cutting your nails well if you use lead solder as it can get under them and get to your food.  It does preform much better and that is still what many factories use to make strong connections, but if you would rather not take the risk then good for you.  I really isn't too dangerous at all if you are responsible, but many people aren't and that is what makes it dangerous.

If you didn't mean to bring it up again you wouldn't have.

Look, Starrz, as far as lead vs. lead-free solder, do the research, read some MSDS sheets, check out what some extractor sites have to say about it, hell, google it. Just do the research and make up your own mind about it, don't listen to what any of us say about it. Be a personally responsible individual and find the information yourself and make your own decision about it, 'cause in the end it's your health not ours.

The fumes are still dangerous, rosin fumes could still cause respiratory problems ect.
For some reason I always though lead fumes would be worse, but I have barely ever worked with lead-free.
