My computer build
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:05:09 PM »
Intel Xeon w3520 2.66GHz i7 CPU (being overclocked)
Asus P6X58D motherboard (bought)
12GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM (overclocked?)
850w Corsair 850tx
Tri Monitors (not sure model)
ATI Radeon HD 5970 GPU
Thermaltake Element V case (bought)
128GB SSD
300GB WD Velociraptor (bought)
1TB of storage
All watercooled
Haven't decided on any drive bays yet, but I'll have a DVD/CD burner, Card reader, and Bluray reader for sure.
Custom lighting? Hell yeah. Haven't decided what yet.

Should have all of it bought by the end of the month or middle of next month.. =)

Thoughts? Ideas? Go for it.

What are you going to use it for? Seems like overkill.

Still, no doubt about it, it's a rockin' system

Everything ;)
It'll be hooked up to my HDTV for the 3rd monitor and 7.2 channel (buying after the computer) home theater setup as well.
Gaming while sitting on the couch ftw.

Thanks for the feedback.
Motherboard came in today!
Case is being delivered on Tuesday.

I'm extremely excited I'm finally able to build a sick desktop.
Thanks for the comments =D
Next parts I'm buying are the RAM and probably the CPU and SSD.

Eventually I'll price out the build and then compare it to what I'm actually paying lol

Because I can sell it and get a cheaper one that will suffice.
Might upgrade in the future, but I highly doubt I'll need to.

Any thoughts on the hard drive setup?
If I went SAS drives, they'd be blazing fast, but a ton more expensive and I'd need a SAS controller too...
and if I went 7k2 SATA hard drives, they'd still be fast but not that fast, and I'd be fine.

Or maybe get a 1TB SATA drive for now then upgrade to a 1TB SATA 3.0 drive when possible, then just keep the SATA 2.0 drive still.

Any ideas?

Go for the best hard drives (best as in fastest) possible, because that's the slowest part of your system. Also unless you definitely need 12 GB of RAM right now I'd buy 4 and slowly upgrade as the price of RAM continues to drop.

Actually, now that I think about it, you already have a fast drive (the Velociraptor) that I'm assuming you'll game off of, so the 1 TB should be pure storage, so instead of speed go for reliability - you don't want that thing dying at any point.

As for the RAM, get however much you need and buy more later. You'll save a decent chunk of money.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
I really wanted to go for 4GB sticks, so that it could be upgraded to 24GB in the future.. haha.

I'll check my mobo specs and see what DIMMS need to be filled to boot.
The 12GB was only like $250, not bad.
I'll go 6GB for now then grab another 6GB after a while then.

Any suggestions on really reliable hard drive manufacturers?

edit:
Found an OCZ Z-Drive 512GB version that ends in just under 2 days. If it goes for a decent price, I may pick that up. I doubt it'll go that cheap though.

edit 2:
There's 2 drives. I'm trying to get both. 1TB of SSDs > any hard drives.

edit 3:
Nevermind =( My x1 slot would bottleneck it too much for it to be of any advantage. I'll just try for 1 and then get a hard drive with it.

I don't need to know about SSDs lol. I like Western Digital too. I'll probably go with them...

I'm going back down to an i7 920, so 4.8GT/s. I felt a Xeon was overkill. If I wanna upgrade in the future, my friend can get me any Xeon for about 2/3 of retail price.

Lol. Should be buying PSU or RAM soon.

I think I'm gonna get the basic computer (Just need GPU, PSU, CPU, and RAM left for that) and then sell my laptop to pay for some other stuff (other RAM, LCS, HDDs, Monitors).

I'll keep you guys posted.

Got about $375, about $100 cash, getting about $100 hopefully tomorrow, possibly another $45 soon. Maybe more cash soon too.

Once I get the PSU, one set of RAM, and the CPU then I'm going to sell my laptop and buy more parts using that money.

Post Merge: January 31, 2010, 01:32:04 PM
Got a CPU.
Xeon w3520. 2.66GHz, SLBEW stepping (D0).
OEM.

Got it for $185 =D

Got a CPU LCS block, a radiator, and some blue led lit case feet. $98 shipped. I wanted to use up this $100 visa I had.

Got $150, and getting ~$500 probably by the end of next week.
Also selling chocolate in school for side money.

Uh. Yeah...this is on hold for a while. Paypal closed my account and I lost $1300 (well, for 180 days) and I've got to pay $1200 of that back to my friend...

I'm selling stuff on his behalf. We both make money.

My account was limited because of too many high payments, and then when I couldn't provide ID, they locked it. It's limited until I turn 18 and I have to wait 180 days before I can request a payout.

Oh well. Check the auction section. Selling a few things.

Post Merge: February 10, 2010, 01:33:32 PM
Should be ordering the 12GB of RAM and the PSU by next weekend along with maybe buying some more LCS parts.
Then I'll have another $575 in another week or two and I'll be buying my two TB hdds and probably the rest of the LCS and if there's enough left over then maybe a screen. After that, it all goes to the GPU.

Post Merge: February 12, 2010, 11:58:01 AM
Radiator, CPU block, AS5, and case feet came in today.
The case feet aren't compatible with my case (it says compatible with all TT cases though=/). Oh well.

Installed a 120mm fan onto the rad and mounted it on the top of my case in the spare 120/200mm spot. I just checked specs, and my fan was actually 140mm but it fit the 120mm holes on the rad perfectly fine. Hey, works for me.

It looks pretty awesome right now. =D

Oh, and in case anyone hasn't noticed, the OP specs are constantly being changed slightly based on available products and prices. So far, this build is worth like ~$1200 and I've spent ~$900 on it.

List of parts to buy still:
MP2W mPCIe to PCIe adapter x2, one for wifi, one for bluetooth
6GB RAM
WDCB 1TB hdd (maybe 2)
Radeon 5970
Water Temp Probe
Temp Reader/Fan Controller/Card Reader 5.25" bay
Monitor x3 (unless I can find a better center monitor)
5.25" to 3.5" bay converter
3.5" dual 2.5" HDD hot swap enclosure
DD GPU Block

Questions, comments, suggestions? I need roughly another $2200 more. I'll have $1300 by the end of the month and I can always sell my laptop for $800 too. Selling my JTAG motherboard and spare iPod to get another (hopefully) $120.

Post Merge: February 12, 2010, 12:48:23 PM
Oh and I need to buy a Razer Mamba and (probably) a Tarantula or Lycosa.

Post Merge: February 12, 2010, 05:39:52 PM
Edit:
I lied. I need another $2900 before tax/shipping before this is done...

I've been looking at stuff and I've figured out how I'll do my liquid cooling system.

It starts with the pump, which gets the water from the reservoir. The outflow from the pump will be split. One line will go to the NB, then the GPU, then a voltage regulator, and finally to a 120mm radiator. The other line will go to the SB, then the CPU, then the other regulator, and finally to the second 120mm radiator. The line will then join, and go to the external (most likely 120mm) radiator. From here, it goes back into the case to the reservoir.

:censored:ing A.
My LCS setup is currently $390, and I spent ~$80 more on parts already, and then I'll need the other two radiators. Oh lawdy.

This gives new definition to "Go big or go home".

Possibly buying a SSD by the end of the week. Possibly.
Same 128GB 1.8" that I was gonna get from my friend, except instead of getting it from him for $150, I'm buying it from a retailer for ~$280. It retails about $350 so that's still good.
