Solar Powered PSP
« on: January 16, 2010, 12:30:24 PM »
I was looking through the digikey directory when I found this ultra small solar cell. (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?WT.z_header=search_go&lang=en&site=ca&keywords=%09CLA291-ND&x=18&y=14)
Just wondering if it was connected in a string with other cells and connected to a voltage and current regulator if it could be used to charge the psp battery. (specs attached)

I highly HIGHLY doubt that's possible because of the amperage needed.
Based on the short circuit voltage being 25uA, I doubt the amps outputted by this would be anywhere near enough to power the psp or even charge it, really.

I could be wrong though.

If I remember you need around 1amp at 5v through the power plug to turn on the psp, but it is much less than that once it is turned on.

1 A = 1,000 mA
1 A = 1,000,000 uA

The solar cell cranks 25uA, we all agree that it does. So You will need 25,000,000 solar cells in paralell to get 25 Amps of current at 8v.

Whoo OMG thats alot.

What about putting a transparent solar cell on the screen? Hmmmm. Maybe I'm onto something here.

AND Here's the Google page:

If anyone can find a commercially available one.

EDIT: I misspelled the word "it" wow I'm a retard.

why not just have a solar panals charge some batteries instead?  then the batteries would charge the psp and the circle is complete.  this way you could leave it out side to charge and not damage the screen from too much sunlight.

Another idea is to have it charge the psp thru the usb port.  have it hook up kind of like a go cam

Yea I did that idea a few years back, it was one of my first mods.

Still Tri Edge, many solar cells still are needed to supply the battery with current to charge it; else it will take a   L O N G   time.

I think there are better solar cells then this that would provide better amps.

A few good moderate solar panels can be found here http://www.solarworld.com/SolarPanels.htm We need to make Ghost Death's mod just a bit more sexy and practical.

Shizznizz. Ok this has bumped to a high priority for me now.

I Will Have Schematics as soon as possible then i will post pics during assembly of the charger. (i don't own a PSP myself, i mod them for cash from people at school, maybe i could convince one of them to help me with a bit of R&D work so he can have a free Solar powered charger).

When the tweaking all that jazz is finished then a product can be released to the AM shop.

i've already put this into a case from walmart. it took a long time to charge the psp but it did the job.  seems i wasn't the only one with the idea.

here you go guys. all of the work done for you. only $50.

if anything though i would say install an external battery to this so that you can have it charge your psp even when the sun is down.
