Carputer
« on: January 28, 2010, 06:24:34 PM »
Okay, So my new project has began.
I am installing a 10.2" touchscreen in the dash of my truck. It is going to be connected to a mac mini with a external 5.1 surround sound card.
The speakers will be pushed with a jl audio 300/4 amp.
The sub is an 8w7
The sub amp is currently a zx750.1 but I am switching to a 500/1 amp
The screen is a 10.2" xenarc 1020TSV

I have the 8w7, the 300/4 amp and the zx750.1
I have bid on the mac mini already.
The screen will be molded into the dash, I will remove the ac vent and the traction control button as well as relocating the ac controls to the lower area.
Plan on using centrafuse as the front end for the carputer as well as a gps chip for the carputer. Comments/Critacizim and questions welcome. Pics will follow soon. Estimated date of completion is April 1st.

I lost the mac mini. So I was talking to my dad last night and I am going to buy his zotac motherboard and intel core 2 duo 2.66 ghz processor. The motherboard is micro itx so It will be plenty small. I already have 4gb of ram, so I will buy a computer case and laptop hdd off mp3cars.com
As far as the internet I will be eventually buying a network card from verizon. But for now I will do without. I plan on running windows 7 with a centrafuse front end.

I may have a surprize coming up. I will let you guys know tonight but it would be awesome if it works out

Here are some photos of the mobo.

I bought a 40gb intel x25-v ssd today. It seems real nice. All I need now is  a power supply, a touch screen, a case, and a new dash bezzle. ( I already bid on a new dash bezzle from ebay for $20.

The power supply is a special power supply ( The m4-atx). It plugs into the same wires as your aftermarket radio

So you get the power from the car?  Wow, hope you don't leave it on while the car is off LOL.  Batts will die fast  :greedy:  Seriously though that is super cool and I am mad jealous... :dribble:

The powersupply will be hooked into the ignition so that it will shut off after the car is turned off. It has a sensor so that it stays in standby for a certain ammount of time and then shuts off.

How about a power inverter? Its not the most permanent of solutions but whatever its still a good idea if you want to be sure the computer if fully turned off.

You should consider installing more batteries,or one of those battery charging kits that charges the battery with a little dynamo attached to one of your wheels.I used to have a setup similar to what you're looking at,20 minutes playing half life 2 and the car wouldn't start, but when I installed an extra 2 batteries and said dynamo kit I never had any problems with it running the batteries down
Derp.

Well installing a dynamo isnt going to do anything a alternator wont do. You really shouldnt be running anything on just your battery without your car running, espicially somthing that is drawing a nice amount of amps

Alright. I have been sort of under a rock for a little while. I had some rather serious problems with my truck. ( It caught fire). Nothing that I did caused it. Before I purchased the truck it was towed behind an R.V. They had the towing lights on it and the wires were ran near the battery. The battery created enough friction to catch fire and the front left corner of my truck was up in flames. It is now fixed. My transmision was leaking and I had to get that fixed as well as some jerk rear ended me in a parking lot while I was in the store and they fled the seen so now I have to fix my back bumper out of pocket. The carputer project is still on. I feel that I just had a rough stretch, A couple of things have changed though. Instead of getting the 10.2" xenarc lcd I ordered a 7" liliput lcd. I am ordering the bezle  and a carnetix power supply next to get things going. I got a 13w7 sub for my truck from a local shop that went out of buisness. So I am having to get a more powerful amp for the sub. Everything should be done in about 2 months. I am doing things to where it can easily be returned to stock. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Are you still going to have a deck? If not, that's your choice, but I like to be able to change the volume with a twist of a knob. What if you get bored with the music on your carputer and you want to listen to the radio?

I won't have a deck. I will however have a knob installed for volume control as well As a radio tuner hooked up to it. There will also be pandora radio from the internet card. I should be good

Yea, It sucks. My truck is in the shop today. Hopefully will be out tonight. The bumper is getting straightened out. Installing carputer soon. I have a alpine cde-100 head unit I might install temporarily until the carputer is done so that I can have some beat in there from the 13w7.

i was gonna run the carputer rout, but with my lowered suspension i still don't think a SSD is going to cut it. i have a micro ATX zotac and a 12V DC power supply but i still think my car will beat the crap out of it. so im going for http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ixa-w407 the only reason i would go with a car PC would be for the USB to OBD2 looking forward to see what your gonna do and if you wanna buy any of my stuff including the flip out 7in touch screen i have let me know.

Alright you guys. I am finally close enough that I have set up a date to install the carputer. It will be April 20th and 21st. I will have everything here this week. I will probably go ahead and get the amp all ready to rock and start drilling holes for power wire etc. this week. I am a little woried about the fit of the touchscren in the dash. It looks like I may end up having to shave my opening which I did not want to do but I guess I will have to order another dash if I decide to stock it back out. I already have my RCA's ran as well as my power wire for the 300/4 and the remote wire with the speaker wire ran up to where the headunit plugs in at. I may post a diagram for the wiring if anyone is interested.
