NEED HELP- ps3 controller CN2 block came off idk what it is

Hey guys i was modding my ps3 controller and accidently droped a blob of solder around the CN2 block on the circuit soo it came off and now the controller wont work, i dont want to give up on it so is there anything i can do like create a jump or something?

Hey soz about the long wait I go college but i done some surfing online and found my board here it is (hope it shows the image)

its the "cn2" block near the chip which has come off

That Looks like a Capacitor to me. Ether a Ceramic or a Mylar Capacitor between 4.7nF and 1nF (Nano Farads).

Thats my guess IDK. But if you dropped a blob of solder on it, use a desoldering Braid or desoldering wick you can buy at radioshack for around $4.00

You can use the wick to desolder parts off of circuit boards.

** Don't heat up surface mount components too long because they may get damaged or come loose off of the board. Then it will be a to get it back on. -- Apply the Braid to the component and apply some heat and wait for the solder wick to absorb the solder then remove both soldering iron and solder wick.

Did i mention its already come off :o thats the problem and im sure its the only thing thats not allowed the thing to turn on theres only 4 pins cant i jump the connections or something?? because i lost the tiny part too.

No. Dont jump the connections because that can stuff up real fast.

A capacitor is a filter, filters prevent unwanted stuff to enter places. Capacitors filter DC electricity but let AC electricity pass.

If you Short and jump the connection the DC will be able to flow through where originally only AC could. So no.

If you really want to fix this without killing your controller then you may be able to get off the hook with a normal capacitor soldered right on there. The job may be half-ass but it will probably work.

the cylinder ones will do the trick then? and does it matter about the rating on em or is it ok if its a little off?

Ok. You will need the Ceramic Capacitors. Not the Cylinder ones.

I assume; from experience The capacitor is between 1 Nano Farad and 10 Nano Farads.

CN2 is used for decoupling, and missing it isn't going to keep the controller from powering up. If there's a short there it could, or if it was used for coupling it might, but that's not the issue.

One thing that happens on those controllers after taking them apart is the foam piece that sits in the Daughter board bracket falls out and then when the controller is put back together it doesn't press on the main board contacts enough, so none of the buttons will work.

Without knowing exactly what was done to it and some pics though it's hard to say what the real issue could be, might be where you were 'modding' is where the problem is at.

100 percent right on the post above before u solder anything on the controller i would look for the black foam piece as it is the key to power no foam no go lost one on a controller once and got nothing wene put back together  black tape works great just fold and fold tell its rectangular and about the same thickness  as original foam works great as it just need to let the ribbon make contact

naww the foam blocks still there, one thing i noticed tho was that it started up when i plugged it in via usb but all of a sudden thats stoped too. when i was just testing things out on it after that the red lights started flashing on it so im guessing its still got some life in it, so theres a short somewhere thas prolly messing it up then?

im still saying the ribon its not set right it has to be on the prongs so it dont move sony sucks for the ideal should of kept it like the sixaxis with the slot to put it in

the ribons in properly on the prongs im pretty use to putting back a ps3 controller but this solder blobs realy messed things up, i removed all of it and its down to the bare copper on that area on the pcb i dnt see any jumps on it so i dont know what else could be wrong

i agree with you about the slot thing though, guess they jus trying to make it mod proof pain in the ass to solder on too lol
