Xbox Laptop?
« on: March 19, 2010, 12:25:39 PM »
Have any of you attempted to make a xbox 360 laptop like the one benheck created? Just kinda curious to see how challenging it would be.

Monkey that sounds good.

Lets not just make a laptop, lets make a "Tablet 360". Something more exotic than an xbox360 laptop, thinner, even more portable, and cool looking.

Any design ideas?

They are coming out with a slimmer version of the 360; they removed the memory card slots and a few other details they 'improved'.

awesome! I would actually really like to start trying to do something like this although since I am not a modder yet it would prolly be a stupid mod for me to begin with since I'll prolly :censored: it up. I'm actually gonna work on my soldering/desoldering skills on a PSP or something for a little while and work on some PSP mods and then maybe try this. But I figured since you more talented guys could pretty much nail this down and most of you are older then me and have some good paying jobs.

Fookz, what do you think the minimum thickness woul be for this? We would need to develop sone custom software for the touch screen, (personally I think a keyboard would be easier) but I'm more than happy to do some concept sketches.

That is nothing compared to the different versions that Benheck worked on. Plus if you guys need any tutorials/help figuring :censored: out on your own (if you plan to make one) then just go to benheck.com, he has a tutorial explaining how he did his. I think the hardest part would by far be the case.

Just use a 2' shear to cut the case out and a TIG welder and you've got the case down.

TIG welder to cut maybe overkill but i agree if the metal is thicker than 1/8" thick.

Use an induction welder to braze the edges together so its easy to paint afterward so you dont have to bondo and grind.

Cut with a TIG? Wha...

You can WELD with a TIG, and I've successfully welded 30 GA. stainless, it's not overkill..

I have no idea how to weld so I'm pretty much screwed in that area haha. I have a few friends that do weld though that might be able to help. How would you be able to make a plastic case though?

you could also go and buy some cold weld from your hobby shop, mix the two ingredients, put it where you need it, let it harden then boom good as ever,
i also would like to know how to make a plastic case, if you can help :)

I know I've only heard that term a few times and when I did hear it it was having to do with soldering? I don't quite understand it's meaning though.

I got a spare PSP motherboard so I'd just practice on it. But just to get back on topic a bit, does anyone here think they could make a Xbox 360 laptop?

I'd actually have to agree with you although I have never torn my PS3 apart to see how simple the setup actually is, have torn my 360 down and it doesn't look very complicated. Speaking of ps3 laptops, anyone see the video of Benheck's? If not check it out...

Make a case yourself:

TOOLS:
Drill Press or drill
3/32" diam pin-tipped drill bit
28TPI hacksaw blade and hacksaw

MATERIALS:
1/4" Thick MINIMUM Plexi Glass
Low V.O.C. PVC cement or tons of hot glue which ever one you prefer
Turpentine: to remove excess PVC cement
90 Grit sandpaper
150 Grit Sandpaper (Bondo polishing sandpaper)
plexi glass
duct tape
1/8" diam self-tapping screws

Draw case on paper, measure twice and cut once an all of the case's sides and walls. Hot Glue or PVC cement in place temporarily before you drill holes so it doesn't move.

Drill holes in places where screws are about to be placed, double up the thickness with another layer of plexi glass if needed, add liberal amounts of PVC cement wait to dry and drill the holes. When Holes are drilled immediately screw in screws carefully.

Make sure when drilling it is perpendicular with the plexi glass. Also drill deeper than the length of your screws since it will crack the case when it diggs far enough.

once you have mounted the pieces together, you may add PVC cement if you want to, its not necessary at all, sand the corners a bit to take the edge off to prevent cracking it if bumps.

If you want to add a curve to the plexi glass heat it up with a heatgun or a hair dryer and let cool. Heat slowly as this may cause it to bubble and warp. to cleanly bend a 900 angle, use a heavy item thats flat, yet soft and strong at the bottom and use a rubber mallet to hammer the corner into place.
