Is there any way to have the background of the logo match the color of the shirt? A larger "planet" plus background that is the same as the shirt would look fantastic. Centered, of course.

yeh if it isnt how you like it return it and get a refund - then redo your design so that it has a transparent background and use the official cafe press templates so that oyu can get the sizing correct

Don't get me wrong, I like the shirt. Will just make sure future designs work as intended. The shirt is damn comfy :).
