Xbox 360 Components...
« on: July 19, 2010, 07:58:24 PM »
Can internal Xbox 360 components be used by another Xbox 360? Like I just got an xbox off a buddy today for free that has a bad graphics card or whatever they call it in the 360. The console still displays a pictures but tends to :censored: up the display often. So can I take a graphics card from another xbox and put it into this one without getting any errors?

Yes. Be sure you have the SAME Motherboard, proper kind of Reballing Equipment, and Liquid Flux. Use the reball station to remove the GPU chips from the board and have a desoldering wick handy to remove excess solder from the new GPU chip. Add fresh solder and reball the working chip to the original board.

But BEFORE you try anything major to the console like that please try a solution that may not require as much work because you can save yourself time. Only try this method if you declare the chip as "dead".

if you donthave a reballing station or $2k to spend on one, dont even attempt.

try the xclamp fix and hit the hana chip with a heat gun at around 375-400 F

Thank you for the help you guys, think I'm going to postpone fixing this for awhile though since I don't quite have the knowledge yet to even mess with the motherboard, especially when it comes to soldering haha.

do the xclamp, it cant hurt.

better yet, if its not open, go to microsoft.com register it and see if its covered for rrod. if so get out a towel, heat it up, and send it in for a new one.

It's not giving me a red ring. All that is wrong with it is graphically it messes up from time to time. I will hook it up sometime today and take a picture of it and show you what I mean.

I have seen it I believe, the graphics come out of line like the old multi colored 3d movies. sometimes it has lines in it. this is a failing hana chip (graphics chip) it is only covered under one year. three red lights is covered under the three year waranty.

So then I should just hit the hana chip with a heat gun at around 400F? and what exactly does heating up do to the chip to make it work? j/w. and Could heating the chip possibly make it fail fully instead of fixing it?

if the waranty is no good, yes, you can hit the hana chip with heat. this will heat the existing solder and hopefully repair the micro cracks in the solder joints holding the chip on the mobo. yes, too much heat could damage the chip, or could even completly melt the solder and bridge the pins of the chip. that would be a complete loss.

I have repaired a few consoles like this. I have lost some also. lol its a crap shoot

lol well maybe I'm just gonna wait for it to completely crap out on me first then because I can still see :censored: for now. Like it only does it at random times not all the time. Also, since I'm talking to you, what is the best way to remove the clear power button symbol from the power button so I can paint it without painting over the symbol?

you can cut it away in the back to trim away just enough to remove it. when you re-install it you can add just a touch of hot glue to insure it wont fall out on you.

The hottest temp that you want to put on the gpu or cpu is 240-250c for 320 seconds.  If you use to hot of heat it will damage the graphics card.  And you dont need 2k for a reball kit.  I bought my reball kit for $75 and it works great.  Buy some .6mm solder balls.  If you dont have experience with reflowing or reballing, you would be better off taking it to some one that does because there is a high possibility on doing damage if you dont know what your doing.

i'm sure if you asked nicely in the modders for hire section you may find someone there who could work something out reasonable for you. i got a great deal of my experience in electronics from my circuit boards production job and i can tell you that a lot of this stuff is intimidating for no reason. if you pay close attention to what you are doing you should be able to do more than you think you can. as far as reballing a BGA chip i have never done but i am considering buying a work station for myself, just to try it out.
