One Inch Punch - When RAM becomes FeRAM
« on: August 28, 2010, 03:35:35 PM »

Engadget

Researchers from Japan's Tohoku University have set a new benchmark for next-next-next gen data storage.

Ferroelectric film consists of various materials including Iron and Silicon. This has been around for a while now, but these researchers have managed to pack four trillion bits of data into one square inch of film.

That's over 450 Gigabytes of data on a single square inch.

It is also noted that the film's properties are best used in a RAM (dubbed FeRAM) configuration - as the film's 'transistors' allow large amounts of memory to be transferred to a small area with negligible delay. Forget 1600Mhz - this goes as fast as the clock rate of the processor - any processor - up to stupidly high speeds.

Whoa O_O

I'm going to start calling that Iron RAM because it sounds cooler.

Remember the speed of computers will get maxed out when the speed of data transfer will bypass the speed of electricity.

But that's where quantum computing comes in :) Then it's the speed at which you can move the atoms (FTL?).

I Think light will bethe next logical step for data transfer then...

To compute data faster than light/electricity you have to use quantum mechanic methods where a particle is at two places at once (basically the particle is traveling faster than light the illusion is when it appears in two places at once).

Like I said, quantum entanglement. You force an atom to be in two places at once, then separate them. If you do something to one atom, the same thing happens to the other.

Well, a better explanation for what all this means is this new memory can be as fast as the speed of light and holds 1000x times more memory than a USB flash drive but uses similar old school technology from a cassette tape but on a super-small scale.
