usb sticks in wall in new york ..
« on: October 30, 2010, 09:11:07 PM »
yea you heard right apparently all across new york there are usb sticks stick out  of brick walls.  The idea is to create an anonymous, offline file-sharing network in public space. The drives are completely public and anyone can plug in to drop and download files and its all part of a art project called "Dead Drops" by Aram Bartholl  wonder how long before viruses and porn are uploaded for people to access

on a side note never thought i would get a article with almost 500 views

"I am pleased to preview ‘Dead Drops’ a new project which I started off as part of my ongoing EYEBEAM residency in NYC the last couple weeks. ‘Dead Drops’ is an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. I am ‘injecting’ USB flash drives into walls, buildings and curbs accessable to anybody in public space. You are invited to go to these places (so far 5 in NYC) to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your files and date. Each dead drop contains a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is still in progress, to be continued here and in more cities. Full documentation, movie, map and ‘How to make your own dead drop’ manual coming soon! Stay tuned."
From- http://datenform.de/blog/dead-drops-preview/

Seems like a neat concept but it would be a little odd just standing there holding your laptop against a wall to snag the data. I mean you could use a usb cable, but still... Plus there is the chance somebody would come by and snap the usb. Should be neat though, I'd check out what was on one.

lmao, that is the dumbest idea ever.....i would never plug my devices into that shiz. I would probably go up to them and break them out of the wall because its such a dumb idea.

I don't think its that bad an idea, tbh I think they should have setup unsecured wifi spots that are connected to a network drive, that way they could avoid tampering to the hardware.

Yea... See I mentioned people that would break them. Kind'a messed up guys.. If your not going to use it leave it alone. It's that simple. How'd you feel if somebody broke your stuff because they thought something of yours was stupid? I mean really now.

Lol the only reason i say that is because its such a stupid idea. I mean come on...be honest. If you seen a usb sticking out of a wall or a curb would you hook your laptop or some device into it.....The idea of putting random usb sticks in walls is just ridiculous. Lol and no i would not like some random person breaking my property, but if i was dumb enough to put usb sticks in a wall, then i guess i deserve what is coming to me.  That shiz just sounds like virus galore to me :sadno:

It could be really cool, and if somebody honestly doesn't scan the files they are sticking on there computer for virus before hand... I am curious as to the size of the flash drives though... I mean I hope his project goes well and later we might see neat things like wifi spots connected to network drives. It could be really cool. Sounds like something from a video game though. XD

I like the concept and the virus argument is null as you take that risk anyway with p2p and the Internet. I could only see it been of value if the USB sticks used are above 8gb. And it would be awesome if someone were to develop "little black boxes" that use a rechargeable battery with solar and ac Jack  etc that has a short range open wifi and a small 160gb iPod drive in it that could be used as mini file time capsules that could be placed all over the place.

so basically it either immediately gets ruined or starts to rust and then it gets ruined.

lol this is AWESOME!!! if i saw a usb sticking out of a wall i would plug it into my laptop and see what it contained if i had my laptop with me. im completely serious. i would not worry about viruses and even if there was who cares! this is epic!! :yess: people should scan files before they enter there computer anyway. if i get some cheap usb drives off ebay i will put some around where i live! the only thing im worried about is if i break it trying to hold the laptop against the wall. and people would walk by and be like "wtf  :eyebrow: why are you holding your laptop like that".

i would get some female usb to male usb cable extender things and put the whole usb drive with the cable connected then encase it all in cement. less chance of breaking. this is an epic idea!   :w00t:

if you put it in a building or a house that you do not own the owner will come out and look at the wall and be pissed...

whoever does not think this is epic can not use the usb sticking out of the wall. simple. dont freaking break it. if you break it you shouldn't be allowed near public property. who cares if you think it sucks, some people don't give a carp what you think and will be pissed you broke there stuff. maybe those people will be a group. and what if there around and they look and see you breaking there usb out of the wall? even people who don't know what it is will see you breaking something out of a wall.

put up a sign that says public shared files or something and if your here to put viruses or break it then gtfo.

i like the idea with the unsecured network, then you could ban people and see who used it and what they put or took. just need to find a secure place to put it.

not if the actual memory unit is water tight it'll be fine and as for the usb part im pretty sure they're made form stainless steal so wont rust...... it may cause issues if its still wet when someone uses it as in shorts or something but its still a cool idea.... im a construction worker.... so ya never no i might be able to sneak in a usb stick into some of my new build building from time to ttime but i doubt it lol

@data hacker.....lol wow you seem really excited about this retarded usb in wall shiz....I dont know if some of you have thought of this, but i doubt the owners of houses/buildings around your area really want a usb device sticking out the side of their property. I know i would be pissed if i walked out of my house and saw a group of punk kids all huddled up around my property.  The only good thing that could come out of this idea is making a time capsule out of it.

Why not develop a second internet dedicated to file hosting? Kinda like phone booths? Each booth is wire LAN connected via ethernet and a central server, then to upload files people have the choice of wifi connect or USB connect. wifi has to have limited range of 20 feet (6 meters). that central server scans each drive on a bi-weekly basis to detect viruses/porn/pirated software.

This is a cool idea but theres always people who are going to destroy it...  make the drives super-bulky so they wouldn't care to take it. A 10kg bullet proof/water proof/concrete reinforced hard drive thats 10 GB for example make it extra hard to steal/break.

What about the occasional douche bag that deletes everything? lol

That is a good idea fooks. But if it were to get that big, it would be a huge company doing it such as cingular or verizon. I dont think random kids sticking usb devices in walls would be a good idea at all. But i think that the kids with these usb ideas should promote the idea to a company such as cingular or verizon that could actually make it successful.

some sort of organization is better than a company because knowing Verizon or Cingular they would charge to use the "service"...

like you guys said solar power will cover the cost of electricity
