Xbox 360 mod fix new dvd drive help {progress etc}

hi i have a half broken xbox the dvd drive wont read disk it either will or it wont you have to bang it on top of xbox etc I've just compared my drive using pics and i have this BenQ VAD6038 i live in uk and its 17 pounds ebay free postage i had a big rant at microsoft customer support at some annoying Indian women i "she said I'm sorry sir but your console is out of warranty" i said "no problem how much for it to be fix she says " ok sir its 92 pounds" 92 pounds is equivalent to 200 usd abouts are you kidding me an xbox is worth about 40 you can buy them for 40 so i told her to stick it and decided to do it myself

so hers the thing how will i get the chrome strip off the old dvd drive and on to the new ?

2. my plan is too add a fader chip 12f683 plus leds to the hardrive is this possible and some strip leds in the xbox im wondering if anyone can post in this thread helping me in any way possible like parts from ebay uk cheap how to open the xbox power solder points etc plexi glass where i can get that tips on spray painting etc my mission is to get this mod spoke about on acid casts so hey guys frinds please feel free to help really apreciated i probably have the  worst luck to begin with having a rare drive in the xbox = the BenQ VAD6038 cheers

THANKS FOR THE REPLY!!! just wondering 1 what voltage the hardrive gives off and 2 not what resistor to use as i can work that out but what voltage to drop the 12f683 to to run the leds and to make the 12f683 safe done quite a bit of controller modding

i know you can get 12v from the harddrive and you should be able to get 5v in which case run the pic from the 5v source if not hook up a 5v regulator (e.g 7805) betwwen the pic and 12v and use the resistor calculator for the leds or you can get 12v and 5v prewired leds from phenoptix that already have resistors

why would i need it would it work without it?

if there is no 5v line in the harddrive you can splice into then you will need it to power the pic

thanks for the reply friend i have a xcm clear hardrive case so the look will be cool now its just finding the screwdriver to take apart again and take the metal film of the hradrive
