when it reads is it reading all zeroes?

jdm programmers are a pain.

possible fixes/causes based on my experiences...
-try another chip
-try another programming program
-double, triple, quadruple check your wiring (i will have a look when i get a chance)
-make sure youve got the right serial port if you have more than one

i'm sure theres more but i cant remember il update if i think of anything.

tryed every option you said hyper but i dont get how it detects the chip but not the device. not all zeros on code i got 000/001/002/003/000/000

i would take a pic but will take some time since i used my wifes old pc cos mine dont have com port

i did what matt said on a different thread and change to jdm still same.

you used the wrong bread board. look closely at your bread board, it conects holes vertiaclly in groups of three, there you have your socket placed, it looks like the cips pins are shorted together. you are going to have to cut the copper between each pin leg to isolate it. use a continuity meeter to make sure you severed the contact completly.

yeah i noticed it when i did the first resistor and the socket and i put the socket the wrong way so before i did anything else i changed it and cut the copper trace so it would not short.

do that ^
i would also consider de-soldering a rebuilding a bit neater....
also make sure the serial cable you are using has all the pins connected, some dont.
and make sure you have the connections to the serial connector the correct way round?

i hate JDM programmers there are so many things that can go wrong and they dont give any real feadback

its funny you say that... somehting is def wrong. this programer should not read. it doesnt support anykind of debug. you should get blank sectors if you try to read this programmer. this is a write only device.

Wouldn't it be funny if by some accidental error, this actually worked :D ?

Bye bye buying programmers :).

look close at the diagram, see the red dots? those are conections, see the wires that pass over without a red dot? those are not conections.

without having it in my hand to test it, its had to diagnose, but I can confirm 100% this programer will write to the 12f683

Actually, the number one reason why people have problems with JDM programmers is the physical serial port itself. These only work 100% on VERY old desktops that have +13V/-13V true serial ports. This is pre-WINXP models. You can forget about laptops. Anything since 2001 is a hit or miss with the serial port, even on desktops.

And the next part is the OS. XP requires an additional serial port driver. ICProg required portIO.dll to be installed. WinPIC800 had its own XP driver that did not play nice with portIO, and also confused things. And I have yet to get WIN7 to work with hardly anything. It wont even play nice with my USB PickKit2.

Which brings me back to the PickKit. Since it is a native USB device, it works more often with newer OS and hardware systems (though I would stay away from USB3 motherboards, been ifghting that to the point I am going to get a replacement Mobo). JDM will work, but I would suggest finding an older desktop simply for running that.

I had one of those too, but a bad PSU took it out. That is one of the best ways to get a decent serial port in otdays rigs. The point I was making is that for the past 10 years, most Mobos rarely have a serial port anymore, and even those have been 5/-5V ports.

The problem I am having is that I decided to get the newest (not latest) USB3 motherboards when I upgraded recently. I keep having a ton of USB problems. I am at the point now where I am going to get another one that is non-USB3 and replace it.
