LED ROL combining Leds
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:58:56 PM »
so i just did a ROL with some purple 0603 SMD and i must say they are still fairly dim (specialy during the day time, it looks like no lights are on ).  would it be possible to put a red and blue smd leds together to create a brighter purple? has anyone tried it before?  if so, what is the best way of positioning them? on top? facing eachother? etc.

Thanks Willy

its possible but the only way to know is to try. if your careful and well practiced, you may be able to solder both of them sharing pads. just be careful not to delaminate the pads.

u'd need a resistor going to the red led aswell, cos the FV of the red led is lower then the blue, so if they were both wired up only the red would light up.....

so u'd need a surface mount resistor or something to resistor the red led...

i dont mean to say your wrong but the blue LED would be the one to need the resistor if either would. your theory does knock a point though, i didn't think of it. to me just looks like you mixed your message by mistake is all. none the less putting two LEDs on those very small pads is going to be difficult. if it does turn out that you need that resistor you may not be able to actually do it.

no the red led would require the resistor spurg is right...

He's not wrong, the red LED would need the resistor as they normally have lower operating voltages than do blue (or other color) LEDs.

and you can also get it to work/fit on the contacts....

put the blue led on both positive and ground contacts.... then put the red just on the positive contact and put a wire/resistor on the negative side of the red led to a ground point. But that would only work on a cg/cg2 pad .....

this is actually more for a ROL on the console itself.  if the SMDs were hooked up on top of each other in parallel on the daughter board, would it technically power both up since i know u can do led swaps for the boards for red and blue separately and work?

yes, theoretically it should, but the profile of the stacked LEDs probably wouldn't fit under the ROL cover...
