video display in a scoped gun conroller?
« on: March 21, 2011, 07:59:50 AM »
This project came up while working on this thread....
https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php/topic,39107.msg292683.html#msg292683
I was thinking about having some way of displaying high quality video on a small (say 2") screen mounted in a plastic scope. I am thinking about an add on to a FPS move gun. Maybe even make it so when you push the button for looking down the sights it switched the video to the scope? I think wireless might be out for now.
Simpler implementation of this would be like a psp  sized screen mounted to the top of the gun. with all video going to the display.
I did find this....

2 quick ideas on how to do this.
1 with a camera set on like a coffee table pointed at the screen the redisplayed onto a small screen in the scope.
2 split the video output of the ps3 and then send that signal to the screen inside the scope.
hdmi can be split (see http://www.iec-usa.com/cgi-bin/iec/ADP5402 for hdmi split and amplify) and so can standard composite (composite splitter here http://www.21best.com/21_best/electronic/security/video/amplifiers/for_sale_.html#VD12 ) . I don't know about component video though.
I think I will try option #2 .
problems....
how to switch to scoped view?
A simple answer just a momentary switch. say trigger hand thumb button. Once the "ext" port on the move controllers is figured out just tie into the signal for "look down scope" button. L1 on standard controller. not sure which controller controls this for the move controllers but I am guessing its the actual move controller handling look down sights button. A real answer to this would be nice.
Answer : In killzone 3 the nav controller controls look down sight function but remapping is possible I've noticed in all Shooters, Gotta check on new socom yet. The nav is preset to left side controls of the dual shock. with added x and o buttons.
A solution to this came to me in thinking about a solution to the digital trigger (fire button) problem. instead of a 2 wire plug between the move controller and the gun , use a stereo headphone jack. 3 wire. now use second wire for trace on aim button and connect to switch on display. Auto video scope.
Power? I have a 5" lcd that runs on 12vdc. A lil large but good for proof of concept.
Finding a small high deff lcd?
this one maybe
http://www.lcdshow.com/1Small_video_LCD/3.5in_Video_LCD/3,5_lcd_for_video_monitor.htm
        transmitting video with no lag?
Maybe this setup for wireless video. Receiver runs on 9vdc , so that's a plus.

or
http://www.securitycamera2000.com/products/Wireless-Video-Audio-8CH-2.4G-500mw-Transmitter-and-Receiver-Kit.html

For the overall design I was thinking about something similar to real infrared scopes. the screen is hidden inside and you actually look through real optics to get a proper view of the screen inside.
Any input or help is greatly appreciated .
I still need to figure out how to switch to scope display automatically when I aim.

this is my AUG design.

Someones camera lcd project. I like this eye piece.

I've got a super old CS430 intel webcam that might be able to handle some basic proof of concept.

It's far from hidef - 320x240 resolution with composite video input, and it would only work semi well if it was wired, so wireless with it would be more work than it's worth.

What would be really cool would be if someone could do a dual screen to work with shutter glasses, your zoom changing focus between the two shuttered displays. But, that'd take separate graphics processing, or a super modded PS3 to be able to do that. Lots of work but man it'd be sweet.

I have a cam too thanks. But I am going to build a wired proof of concept of this maybe this weekend. I am going to just hook up wired composite video to a small 5" lcd and test it out. the one i have for testing even has a built in digital zoom. For test run all video will be sent to 5" lcd for now. I will put the splitter/amp in later. I need to find something with hdmi in and hdmi out with a composite video out too. that would be perfect. then you can still play in high deff and I dont have to worry about handling a high deff signal.
wow those viewfinders are expensive. I can get a lcd for the project for under 25$ but the eye piece is like 150$  the cheepest viewfinder i could find was this ebay item. http://compare.ebay.com/like/250714105654?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&rvr_id=219877899450&crlp=1_263602_309572&UA=%3F*F%3F&GUID=53287af112d0a03665072867ffdfcd9f&itemid=250714105654&ff4=263602_309572.
this project is going to get expensive quick. 60+ for ebay viewfinder. 25 for lcd. 30 for video splitter (standard deff) another 70 for the wireless video. and a battery to power the beast.

PS3 coding question/idea. The ps3 outputs hdmi and composite. this is switchable via the xmb. A software solution would save some money on a video splitter and give me the ability to output HD to my main display and standard deff to my scope.
thoughts?

i would say keep it simple and stick with the splitter, for now anyway

Well good day/ bad day. I was supposed to go get my move stuff and the sharpshooter today, but I cant now because of funding. "DMV" killed me.  However I had recently returned my 40gb ps3 for a used 60gb that was shipped in from out of state. It arrived today and so did my WD500gb 32MB cache sata 2.5" HDD.  I got it home took out the hard drive and installed the new one in minutes. formatted in like 20 or so. I don't know ,I took a "smoke" break. came back checked the FW. and its on 3.42. So I had everything I needed set up on a 320gb usb HDD , So 3.55(sp3.6)cfw is on. My games are working great! Now I have after formatting of both drives a total storage capacity of 750 GB. I did notice a huge improvement over stock hard drive. Long story short, I will not be getting the items needed for the mod until this weekend. Until then , boy am I going to have some fun.

 GRRR! the ps3 froze up during install of "something" and 500gb internal unreadable by ps3 now. Have to start the hard drive procedure all over again. Notes: its loud and dirty. should I take it apart and clean it right or should I just bring back to them and tell them to clean it?  Because I know they will. this day goes up and down. I was stoked to boot up the manager and see all my games waiting to be played right there on the usb hdd.  but then look where I am now. waiting on wiping/partitioning/formatting.  :beg:

Yeah all is right with the world again.
Back on task. I wont be back on the controller stuff until this weekend.

After a lot of thought and talking to a friend about the scope idea, I have decided to drop the scope idea for now. I am going to put all my focus on the sharpshooter modded into a better gun. testing did not go well with wireless video. way to much lag. the transmitter used was only a 2.4ghz. maybe a 5g will work but they are expensive. a wired version is still viable but I would like the freedom of wireless. I am going to try to get a video demo together of my findings . If anyone can find a good wireless video set up I am willing to give it a another shot.
