3D works by the image being sent to the viewer via two channels (onf for each eye and their glasses showing the two together to make the 3D image. For screen-share the PS3 instead transmits each player’s display into each channel, so one player wears glasses tuned to one the other player receives the other. This means the two players see separate images in 2D but get to use the whole screen instead of having only half. It will certainly eliminate cheating by spying on the other player’s position!
